Hi rcuser

I checked East Lavant to see if I could find John's baptism or other family but nothing.  I'm wondering if he was born outside Sussex?  He would not show on the SFHG baptism database at all.

There was a John baptised in Chichester in 1805 but that's too young and I also traced him marrying an Ann Monk and through the censuses so not our man.

Hi Kerry /janan

I have Samuel Rossiter and Lucy Gandy ( who married at St Peter The Great etc in 1800) in my database.

I have three of their children:-

Harriet baptised 1801
Hannah baptised in 1803
Thomas born circa 1803

There may be more but that's all I have at the moment.

Samuel was the son of Thomas Rossiter and Ann Barnet who married at Bosham, Sussex on December 2nd 1771.

Thomas & Ann could also be the parents of Lucy, Martha and Thomas ( who married Elizabeth Coleman).

Best wishes

There are very few  Rossiters in Sussex on 41/51 censuses - all appear to be from the Chichester area, so are most likely related. Samuel born c 1825 moves to Lancing and dies in that area in 1873. John and Ann found by Kerry are in Parchment St which is in same area of Chi as High and George St. Parchment St is still much as it would have been in 1800's but High and George Streets were demolished in the 1960's to make way for rather boring townhouses.

Hi Jan,  :)

Thanks for taking the time to look that up.

I have various Rossiter families from Chichester. The problem is linking them all together into a branch ( or branches) of the family tree.

It doesn't help that the records of the time do not have all the information you need to link everybody together.

Shame about the townhouses. Older buildings tend to have more character about them.

BTW, I wonder where the earliest Chichester Rossiters originated from?

Best wishes

Hi

Since the first Sussex entry on the IGI is the Bosham marriage you mentioned I'm wondering about Hampshire for their origins - only a few miles up the road. Rossiter seems to be very uncommon name in Sussex, but more common in Hampshire, so would seem a good bet.

Hi Jan,

That's definitely possible as there were several Rossiter enclaves in Hampshire at Eling, Boldre, Brockenhurst and probably a few other places.

I have them mapped out but as usual it's getting the links that bring the elements together in a branch of the family tree.

At the moment in my database I have a lot of Rossiter "islands" which I am trying to link them all together.

Best wishes
