Got Marriage certificate today - still stuck and confused.
« on: Saturday 19 December 09 18:53 GMT (UK) »
I got a marriage certificate today through the post, and I was hoping it would shed some light on my relative, William Armitage.

Previously I had bought the birth certificate of his son, Lawrence Armitage, but had found in difficult to pinpoint the correct William Armitage on the census, however buyimg the marriage certificate hasn't helped much.

The wedding took place on 31st March 1907, between William Armitage (24) and Jane Elizabeth Lomax (21). William was a bachelor and Jane was a spinster. William's profession was Iron/steel dresser. Both of them were living at the address 12 Clarefield Road (Glarefield? Glanefield?). William's father was called George Armitage, and his job was 'moulder'. Jane's father was called Edward Lomax, and was a 'bricklayer labourer'.

The witnesses to the marriage were Charles Armitage and Edith Annie Armitage.

I want to be able to track down William Armitage and his father in the census, but have had no luck searching myself.

I'd love some help with this one.

That is fantastic!

I also found a marriage between Charles Armitage and an Annie Eliza in 1904.

My only trouble is finding any of the family in the 1891 census. I think i might have found George in 1861, but I want to establish the continuity, but I can find nothing for any of them prior to 1891. Maybe I'm just having a bad day at research.

Thank you for finding them in 1881, they look like exactly the right people. As for this:

Same address, same surname, same sons - father and mother have different names  :o

I have no clue at all what to make of that. Is there anyone I can ask?

RG13; Piece: 4383; Folio: 56; Page: 12, Attercliffe cum Darnley, Sheffield District, 60 Liverpool Street

George Armitage 62 Head of Household born Rotherham: Occupation Iron Moulder
Sarah Armitage 50 Wife of Head born Derby, Bronfield
Charles Armitage 20 son Lincs, Gainsboro: Bricklayer
William Armitage 17 son ditto: ?? Foundry
Herbert Armitage 15 son ditto

I think William's occupation is "Fettler in foundry". Fettling is removing the extra unwanted bits from castings, ingots etc. I think it is equivalent to the occupation on the marriage certificate.

The district is Attercliffe cum Darnall and Sarah's birthplace is Dronfield.

Clarefield Road was a short street off Carltonville Road and parallel to Attercliffe Common. Its site is now entirely within the car park of Sheffield Arena.

I think they are the same people in 1891 and 1881 - heaven knows why the names are different - perhaps the census form was so badly written that the enumerator thought they'd put James and Maria when really they'd put George and Sarah  ;D

Burials in Attercliffe Municipal Cemetery
Grave C3081c [the last ‘c’ means consecrated section]
ARMITAGE Alice Beatrice 15 Aug 1891 6w dau of James 60 Liverpool St Attercliffe
ARMITAGE Elsie Maud 12 Aug 1891 6w dau of James 60 Liverpool St Attercliffe
MILLER William Henry 23 Nov 1870 7m inf Church St Attercliffe
[name/date of burial/age/description/address or place where death occurred]

I don't know who William Henry MILLER is but he is listed with the same grave reference.

All three children are also listed in the registers of Attercliffe Christ Church, which means the funerals took place in the church and they were then buried in the adjacent municipal cemetery. (William Henry is William 'Harry' in the church register).

Also in the municipal cemetery:

Grave D3014c
ARMITAGE Mabel 28 Jul 1908 23m dau of Herbert 4 Liverpool St Attercliffe

This is a public grave with 36 burials.

This Herbert could be William's brother, who I think married Jane Elizabeth's sister May:

GRO Marriages MAR Qtr 1905
ARMITAGE  Herbert Sheffield 9c 496
GALLAGHER  Rose Sheffield 9c 496
LOMAX May Sheffield 9c 496
