I can't find James and children in 1871 at the moment but found this family at 11 Wilton Crescent and children are the right profile.  All b Wilton except "Agnes"

Agnes Murta 35 b Castleton (must be a mistranscription of the christian name as the second Agnes is shown as his wife) occ cropper
Agnes   35 wife
Thomas   6
Mary   4
Wilton ED 2 Page  30 Line 7

The images are available to view on Scotlands People which is a paysite and I wonder if surname should be Murray

1861 census for Hawick

James Murray 25 b New Castleton - finisher of tweeds
Agnes   25 b Wilton
James  9 Months b Hawick
Hawick ED 13 Page  5 Line 18

The 1851 has 2 possible entries for him - one b 1836  and the other 1837 - both b Castleton

One was living in Castleton with parents John & Anne and the other was living in Hawick with parents James & Elizabeth

Without his marriage cert it would be impossible to determine the correct parents

Hello,

I would still recommend looking at the marriage certificate, but can tell you that the James Murray, b. 1835 Castleton, son of John Murray and Ann Jardine, died on 19 Sep 1908 at Newcastleton as a single man (ref: Death Cert 1908 784 31).

That leaves the other James Murray as your likely candidate, especially given the naming pattern.

See him on the 1861 Census here:

http://www.maxwellancestry.com/census/61transcript.aspx?houseid=78913025

and with his parents James Murray and his wife Elizabeth Shiel in the 1851 census here:

http://www.maxwellancestry.com/census/51transcript.aspx?houseid=78906095

and with his parents again in the 1841 census here:

http://www.maxwellancestry.com/census/41transcript.aspx?houseid=78902010

Elizabeth Shiel died on 9 Aug 1870 at Hope Park, Wilton, James Murray, son, of Wilton Crescent registered the death. She was the daughter of Robert Shiel, handloom weaver, and his wife Agnes m.s. Scoon (ref: Death Cert 1870 810 68).

Agnes Scoon appears on the 1841 census here:

http://www.maxwellancestry.com/census/41transcript.aspx?houseid=78413054

James Murray was born on 17 Sep 1805 at Castleton. He was the son of Walter Murray, hand loom weaver, and his wife Christian Douglas.

Hope this helps,

Emma

Hi,
Did your James Murray have a sister called Janet?
I have a Janet Murray b approx 1813 Wilton, Rox, who married John Burns. Her mothers name was Christina b1778 Yarrow, Selkirkshire. The family lived in the Wilton / Hawick area of Roxburgshire. Janet Murray would be my 4 x Gt Grandmother.

Happy Hunting
