Harriet Smith of Molton, Norfolk
« on: Sunday 13 March 05 19:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi All:

I am new to this forum and am looking for info on an ancestor from Norfolk, Molton, England.

Harriet Smith (about as common a name as you can get it seems!)

I found her on the 1871 and 1881 census records of Woolwich, Kent - info as follows:

Age in 1881 - 39 (born abt 1842)
From Molton, Norfolk, England

Married to John Stark abt 1863 (possibly earlier).

I appreciate any information that might be provided.

Sharron (Toronto, Canada)

Could this be her in 1851??? This is Molton in Devonshire though
There isn't a Molton in norfolk. There is however a Melton in Norfolk but there is no Harriet Smith born there. Did it say on both census that she was born in Molton, Norfolk??

Hi Angela:

Thank you for taking the time to research this!  When I wrote my request, I had viewed the 1871 written census record and the name of the town wasn't clear.  But I have since found the 1881 census  and other information which clearly shows Hariett's birth place as Molton, Norfolk, England or simply Norfolk, England.

I'm at a bit of a loss unfortunately... I have tried to locate a Molton, Norfolk, England as well but without success.  I don't know what to think.

Thanks for your help in any case.  Regards, Sharron

Hi Sharron,

I looked at the 1871 census onward and it does look like Molton. I tried google searching but came up with nothing. Its a real mystery. Then I found a Moulton on the 1861 place name index so maybe that could be it. Couldn't find a Harriet on the 1851 or 1861 but there were other Smiths. So that looks promising. Maybe Harriets family moved away from the area and maybe settled in Woolwich where she met John and Married.  Did you ever find a marriage cert for them? that would at least give you her fathers name and hopefully a bit more info.

I wish you all the luck with them. all the best Angela.

Hi Angela & Casalguidi

Yes it is a mystery!  It might very well be spelled be Moulton - the information was taken  by someone doing the census in Kent, they may not have know how to spell it... I think that's a good possibility.  I've found numerous misspellings of place and individual's name over the course of my research.

I will continue the search for information that may help to unravel this piece of the puzzel.

Appreciate your help.

Regards, Sharron

Thank you so much for your email.  I actually came across this census through the 1837 online.com site and it's a very good bet this is the person I am looking for.

I have slowed my research for the summer so haven't had a chance to verify my information.

Thanks again, Sharron
