A lot of people emigrated to the colonies then returned because they were homesick, or they never intended to emigrate permanently. And several people who immigrated permanently did on occasions visit their homeland to visit relatives although it was easier to do that if you had just emigrated to America or Canada. The journey back from say Australia or New Zealand was a lot longer and difficult.

Maybe your family only planned to emigrate for a while then return although in my case my ancestor emigrated permanently in 1886 aged 59 after his wife died. His son, my 2xgreat grandfather was married by then so he was settled.

Another thing I don't understand is why the three girls plus their one of their brothers seem to be alone in 1861.  The eldest girl is head of the house.

John and Mary are living elsewhere.

Gibby, In case you don't know the area - the reason why the family could be living apart in 1861 is that the shops in Market Hill where John C was a grocer were quite small.  New St where Mary and others are listed is only a 2 minute walk away.  Mary was a Grocer's assistant so maybe a large family meant they had to live apart? What year was John Charlesworth born?

Thanks for the information on the area.  I don't know it at all.

John Charlesworth was born about 1800 according to the census.

The 1850 Census is available for free here:  http://labs.familysearch.org/

It appears that there are other Wisconsin state censuses done in that time, but they don't appear to be available online.  http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/genealogy/census/wisconsin/  If you have a Family History Center near you, it appears that they have the 1842, 1846, and 1847 census records available.

Hello Gibby - I was looking at John Charlesworth shop in Market Hill. One of John's sons, I believe the youngest, was Charles Henry Charlesworth b c 1857.
If you google Market Hill National Archives and go in on cached you will see a list of dealings about Charles Henry Charlesworth's properties on Market Hill. There seemed to be quite a sum of money involved.  Your Charlesworth family appear to disappear from Barnsley (at least on my searches) after that.  In 1871 John Charlesworth's son John was Provisions Dealer on Market Hill, married to Charlotte and with brother Charles Henry Charlesworth and Elizabeth Charlesworth sister aged 9, living with him.
Hope this is of some use.
Don't know if this next bit may fit your jigsaw but a John and Mary Charlesworth aged 33 and 34 sailed to USA in 1908 and again in 1921 by which time this John was naturalised (1911) and living in Brigsville North Adams Massachussets. Time wise could be the grandson of the first John Charlesworth.

I'll read through it properly tomorrow when I'm feeling less tired.
