HENDERSON- Syerla, Clonfeacle, Tyrone, Laughgall
« on: Thursday 24 December 09 02:01 GMT (UK) »
I am searching for the parents of my 5x Great Grandparents, Isaac Henderson and Jane (Askin) who were married in Syerla, Tyrone in abt 1797.

They had four children,
1 - James, who was born in Syerla, Clonfeacle, Tyrone in 1799 and married Ann Jane Shillington from Glasmulaugh in abt 1828.
James' eldest son immigrated to America.

2 - Isaac b 1801 in Syerla

3 - Ann b 1802 in Syerla

4 - Joseph b 1805 in Syerla. Joseph married Nancy Allen (not known where or when)  Joseph and Nancy had one known child,
 - Thomas Henderson b in Armagh in 1831 who married Elizabeth Walsh in Laughgall Parish Church on 06/10/1853. Thomas and Elizabeth had nine children but between the 3rd and 4th child they immigrated to New Zealand in 1867 aboard the Lancashire Witch.

I was born in Leeston, New Zealand.
I have studied a map and cannot find a place called Syerla, although there is a Syerla Road not far from Laughgall

Any information would be appreciated - Evan Bennett (Australia)

Evan,
Syerla is a townland (a small administrative area) in the Parish of Clonfeacle near the town of Dungannon in Co.Tyrone.

Shillington is a fairly unusual name here and it may be of interest that I have a cousin's wife whose grandmother was Letitia Maria Shillington, born 1869 in Dungannon.

Thank you for your reply.
I have now determined from what you say that maybe I should be looking for Clonfeacle rather than Syerla.
What would you suggest would be my next step in tracing Isaac Henderson. I have searched Parishes in Tyrone but have had no luck.
Evan

Evan,
You will have to depend on church records where these exist. Civil birth registrations only started in 1864 and Protestant marriages from 1845. Catholic marriage registrations started in 1864.

Very little but if you google proni you will see a means of searching the Calendar of Wills and there are some Shillingtons of Glassmullagh there.

Joseph Henderson, b 1804, had a brother James. James died in Banbeth Ireland  (1874) and was buried in Berrbush Ireland.
Are you familiar with these places?

One may be BANBRIDGE but see www.thecore.com/seanruad and change the "search method" to one of the other settings.

Were you ever able to locate the parents for Isaac Henderson?

Isaac Henderson is my 4th great grandparent though the grandson, Alexander Shillington Henderson, the son of James, who immigrated to America.

I have just started to work on this line, so I don't know where to start.
