Frederic KING (convict of 1848) - transported to Australia
« on: Thursday 24 December 09 23:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Via Ancestry, I *think* I've finally managed to work out where one of my Great (x3) Uncles disappeared off to - i.e. Australia.

Frederic King of Woodbridge in Suffolk was convicted on 28th June 1848 in Woodbridge Quarter Sessions, and sentanced to 7 years.

He sailed on 27th June 1850 on the "Nile", to Van Dieman's Land in Australia.

Is there any way of finding out more about Frederic to determine if he is the same person as my Great (x3) Uncle?

I've seen mention of a book by Richard Deeks, "Transportees from Suffolk to Australia 1787-1867 : a list of people from Suffolk transported to Australia, with indexes of names and villages/towns", but unfortunately this is out of print, and doesn't appear to be available at the British Library - only in some Suffolk libraries (which unfortunately) I don't live near any of them.

Any information anybody has would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Nick

In word word - WOW! Many many thanks, Gazania - yup, that's definitely my Great (x3) Uncle...

A Tailor by trade and resident at Dickleburgh, Norfolk, England - that definitely joins the dots.

If anyone has any more information - i.e. what happened after 17/4/1854, as he apparently was "Established to service" (if I'm reading the document correctly), then please do let me know.

Many thanks and Merry Christmas.

Cheers,

Nick King

Unfortunately Richard died before publishing the book.  His son completed the research and published the book a few years ago.  It sold out in weeks, I saw it and wondered whether to buy one  ::)

Richard's widow has refused to allow any reprints.

Copies are now like gold dust and in fact some of those that were in Suffolk Libraries have mysteriously disappeared  >:(

There are some researchers with copies of this book who kindly carry out look ups - you may be lucky?

Yes, I'd read about that in other posts (after I'd already posted) - ah well, if Richard's widow won't allow a reprint, then there's not a lot that can be done about it.

The annoying thing is that I was at the Lowestoft Record Office earlier on this year (whilst on a 2 week holiday in Southwold), but I hadn't yet found out about Frederic's convict past.

Gazania's link (i.e. downloading the Conduct Record: CON33/1/97 and Indent Record: CON14/1/41) confirmed that Frederic is the same person by virtue of his age (he was born on 17th February 1812), birth place (Dickleburgh, Norfolk), and profession (Tailor - which matches the 1841 Woodbridge Census and that of his wife's (Jane Dixon) death certificate from Woodbridge in 1843).

I guess that since he doesn't appear on subsequent censuses post 1851, then he would have stayed out in Australia and probably died there? So, if Richard's book spreads any more light on what happened after 1854/1855, then I'd love to know! Failing that, if anybody knows what other paths to follow, then please do let me know as well.

Many thanks,

Nick King

On a related site (above) there is a death of a Frederick KIng in 1885 at Launceston Tas with estimated birth as 1811.  SKS may look up the death index for details. Instruction on how to obtain death cert is also given on above site.

Gazania.

PS Go to the Australia, Tasmania board for more links or post a request there.

How bizarre.  Has she got too many ancestors listed in the book ???

I wonder if her son will allow reprints after his mother's death.

Hello Lizzie,

I believe that two or three of the local history groups in the area have also offered to re-print without success, she just won't allow it.

It would be good if one day it would happen - the reason that I didn't rush to buy the original was that I was disappointed with the quality of the publication.

One of my presents over Christmas was the book about the Sudbury soldiers  - following on from the research by Shirley Smith and Val Herbert on the web sites
http://www.sudburysuffolk.co.uk/greatwar/
http://www.sudburysuffolk.co.uk/ww2/

Beautifully produced publication, delighted to have it in my stocking  ;D

(Oh dear, I digress again)  ::)
