Hi Sue
The 1841 for that area is not easy to read so quite easily missed (no name index) have you any other info IE where were they 1851, were they born Sutton as I cannot find a Maria or Joseph in the birth index for Sutton.

Hi

Yes, Robert, Maria and Joseph were all born in Sutton (multiple censuses say so). The father had died and the remainder of the family moved to West Derby before the 1851 census.

Thanks for trying

Hi Sue
There are about half a dozen Suttons in Cheshire http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/chs/parishes.htm#S

I suspect the one you looking at would be in the Wirral or Runcorn areas unfortunatly the census pages are very on my copy are quite poor and cannot be read easily. Is it possible you could confirm which district by way of a birth certificate for the children or maybe a death cert for the father, either of these would help.

Hi,

It looks like this is the only possible match for the death of Robert Williams, on cheshire bmd.

Cheshire Death indexes for the years: 1849
WILLIAMS Robert 55 Chester Castle Cheshire West CAS/11/61

He must have died after fathering Joseph, in Sutton (age 1 on 1851) and before the 1851 census.  The family are in Liverpool on the 1851, so it is also possible he died there.

Looking at the births, there are many Joseph's

the only likely Maria is,

Cheshire Birth indexes for the years: 1837 to 1839
WILLIAMS Maria Eleanor Runcorn Halton RUN/2/33

However I guess she could have been born early in 1837 and just miss the start of civil registration,

We are waiting for the GRO to search for Joseph's birth certificate, and I guess in the meantime we should apply for the death certificate, above, in the hope that it gives us some clues.

Hi Sue
Your first post seems to indicate that Joseph was born 1840 ? are those the correct ages ?

Hi Peter,

thanks for your help.

The year of birth for Joseph was calculated from his age of 11 on the 1851 census, where he was in Liverpool, West Derby, birth place, Sutton, Cheshire.

We have since found him on the 1881 giving his age as 39.

His father, Robert Williams has occupation of farmer on his daughter Maria's marriage certificate in 1872.  His wife is listed as widowed on the 1851.

Hi
      It was this Quote
He must have died after fathering Joseph, in Sutton (age 1 on 1851) and before the 1851 census.  The family are in Liverpool on the 1851, so it is also possible he died there.

if Joseph was born 1840 then his father could have died anytime in the ten years 41-51

Sorry Peter,

I miss-typed.

You are correct Robert Williams could have died anytime in the ten years 41-51.

However, on looking at Cheshire bmd these are the possiblities.
Bearing in mind his first child was born in 1824 and his wife was born c1796.

1844 age 95 Chester Castle Cheshire West
1846 age 58 Wallasey Wirral
1849 age 55 Chester Castle Cheshire West

I guess any could be right, or he may have died in Liverpool.

In the meantime we have taken a leap of faith, (based on the fact that Chester Castle has Guilden Sutton in it and Wallasey has no Sutton) and ordered the last one, in the hopes it may give us some clues.

If you have any other suggestions, I would of course be very grateful.
