Elizabeth West's 'Hovel in The Hills' - my gtx4 gpts Hughes lived there
« on: Monday 28 December 09 14:00 GMT (UK) »
Ellinor Hughes married William Williams and lived in Pentre Mawr, Capel Garmon.
Their family consisted of  Jane, William, Henry, John, Morris  Ellen, William, Margaret, Gwen (also known as Winifred), Mary, Robert, Alice, and Elizabeth.

ELLINOR'S PARENTS, were MORRIS AND GWEN HUGHES
Morris was a carpenter and draper in Capel Garmon and was born in Llanrwst in 1794. His wife Gwen was born in 1797. They were my great, great, great grandparents. He is also recorded as Maurice on certain documents.

MORRIS'S PARENTS were WILLIAM AND ELLINOR HUGHES.
The elderly couple lived at Bron Haul, Nebo, Garth Garmon in 1841, when William was 85 and wife Elinor was 90. This house was featured in Elizabeth West's memoire, 'Hovel In The Hills', but was called Hafod in the book. My gt gt gt gt grandparents
Elinor was born in 1750 and died on the 28th March 1846. Widowed William aged 95, was living with Maurice and his family in 1851.

I would love to hear from anyone related to the Hughes family or Pentre Mawr family Capel Garmon, to share family history, or from anyone interested in the 'Hovel' (Hafod in the book).

The author lives in the Forest of Dean now ... and she has written another    book about their life there.   (Can't remember the title, and can't find it on Amazon !)

However, its not a patch on 'Hovel in the Hills' and 'Garden in the Hills' ...

Hi - many thanks for your comment.
I read the book before I knew of our family connection with 'Hafod'. I read it again in a completely new light as soon as I knew, though. I love the piece about the snow, and try to imagine what it must have been like when my family lived there.
My father, who worked in the Llanrwst Post Office, remembers Mr West, who has sadly passed away.

I enjoyed reading Hovel in the Hills and felt as if I knew the place. It sounded an ideal setting and would love to see the place but I suppose its derelict now.Very interesting to read about your connection with the dwelling.Aleri

I remember seeing an item on the internet about five years ago, from a person who, at the time, lived at Hafod, or Bron Haul (sometimes called Bron yr Haul) as it is correctly named. So it surely is still inhabited. Hope to see it myself later this year, when on holiday in the area. Ken
