Hi and welcome to rootschat :)

As Jim says, can you tell us some more about theRowsons please?

if you have full names and sone adtes it maybe possible that someone can find them in the 19th C census- unless you already have that info.

I know that my 4 grandfather was a John Rowson born c1800, I am not sure where  who was married 3 times, he had a number of children one was a Thomas born 1827 who Married a Martha they went on to have 10 children mostly born in Shrewsbury, I have quite a bit of information with the rest of children but not all. So I would be interested to hear from anyone who knows about the Rowson Family.

Have you checked out the RC Surname list to see if anyone is looking for your Rowsons?

At the top of this page, click on 4th button from  the  left Surnames... also why not enter your surnames of interest there so someone can find you?

Good luck,
charlotte

Hi hiflyergolden :)
This appears to be Thomas in 1841.

1841 Census
St Mary, Shrewbury, Shropshire
HO107/927/10/St Mary

John ROWSON, 30, Laborer
THOMAS ROWSON, 14
William DODWELL, 20, Plumber
Jemima WILD, 20
All born in County

This Census reveals nothing really as John could be the older brother of Thomas and not his Father.!

1861 Census Thomas and Martha have;
Emily 1848
Thomas 1850
Anne 1854
Alice 1856
Elizabeth 1858
+ John Maylham, 27, Unm, Lodger, occp. Carter, born Shrewsbury
By 1871 there are extra children;
Edward 1862
John 1865
Jemima 1868
In 1881 Jemima is down as Minnie

I think he has been mistranscribed and is Marthas Brother ;)
Possible Marriage;
Thomas ROWSON
March 1848
Shrewsbury
18 225
On the same page is Martha MEALAM

When researching our Family Tree post 1837 we must buy the relevant Certificates

What child of Thomas/Martha are you descended from?
Do you have their Marriage Cert?, as will give you Fathers name and occp, and Birth Cert, which will give both parents names and Mothers maiden name?
Once you have those it will hopefully confirm what I have found and then you can get Thomas's Marriage cert to confirm his Fathers name and occp.
There will be no Birth Cert for Thomas as he is born pre 1837 Registration so we need a Christening.

Trish :)

CHRISTENINGS all at St Chad , Shrewsbury, Shropshire

All with Parents JOHN ROWSON and ANNE.
( All Extracted Records on the IGI at Familysearch)

THOMAS, 15 July 1827
SARAH, 02 January 1831

Possible Marriage;
John ROWSON
Anne DOVASTON
25 December 1826, Holy Cross and St Giles, Shrewsbury

I just found the 1851 Census  where Thomas/Martha are under RAWSON
HO107/1992/310/16
Thomas ROWSON, 24, Head, Mar, Packer at thread factory
Martha, 23, Wife, Mar
Emily, 3, Daug
Thomas, 8mths, Son
Mary MALEHAM, 15, Visitor, Unm, Factory girl/spinner
All born Shrewsbury, Shropshire

So there is another Mealam/Maleham/Maylham visitor!
So I am pretty sure that is Marthas maiden name.
I will try to find her in 1841. Wish me luck.

Births/Christenings;
MARTHA MALUM,
Birth 28 May 1827, Christened 08 June 1827
Siblings;
HARRIOTT Maylum, 23 February 1830/21 March 1830
JOHN Maylum, 04 January 1833/20 January 1833
MARY ANNE Maylam, 13 March 1836/17 March 1836
All christened Saint Julian, Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Parents, JOHN and MARY

So 2 of these fit with visitors in Census entries with the Rowsons.

1841 Census
Castle Hill,
St Mary, Shrewbury, Shropshire
HO107/927/12/St Mary

John MAELOM, 45, Labourer, not born in County
Mary, 50
Harriott, 12
John, 8
Mary, 6
Jane, 1
All others born in County

Martha as the eldest is proably away working but I cannot find her >:(

Enough for no remeber the certs!

Trish :)

Hi Trish
What a lot of information, it will take some digesting, I have a few birth and marriage certificates which I will have to sort out and get back to you within a couple of days. I have been doing this family history for sometime now but not as often as I would like owing to other commitments, but I am very interested. I have some other names in my tree which I will also list.
Thanks a lot.
Pearl.
