Why the IOM ??
« on: Wednesday 30 December 09 17:17 GMT (UK) »

I received an email from my cousin with a little bit of added news for our family tree and I wondered if I could ask for some help checking it out please ? any snippet of information would be gratefully received !!  :D

Since finding the burial details of John Avery and his two sons Thomas and John we have tried without success to find any marriage for John senior or any birthdates for any of them in Liverpool.  The only marriage we could find was one between John Avery and Harriet Blinkinson in Warrington, Lancs. On 12th February 1793.
One day I put them in as parents on IGI and up came two children born in the Isle of Man:
Thomas Avary christened 16th June 1799 St. Mathews, Douglas, Isle of Man
Jon Wynn Avery  chr.  19th July 1801  St. Mathews, Douglas, Isle of Man.
In both cases the parents were John Avary or Avery and Hariett Hinchinsope
I maintain that Hinchinson is a misreading because further down the list was a daughter :
Harriet Avery chr. 23rd January 1807  St. Peter, Liverpool – parents John Avery and Harriet Blanleinsop – obviously another misreading.
I put in Harriet Blenkensop in IGI for a birthdate and lo and behold up popped:
HARIOT BLINKINSOP  chr. 11th December 1768 Warrington – parents Thomas and Betty Blinkinsop and I found five more children born to these parents in Warrington

The strange thing is, why would this couple have gone to the Isle of Man?  Unless John senior was working on the ferries between the Isle and Liverpool or was engaged in some other occupation there.  They obviously settled in Liverpool for the birth of Harriet and stayed there until they died ..... is there is an occupation listed for the father on the christening records which would throw some light on why the couple settled in the Isle of Man ?

When did the sons die?

Are Thomas & Jon Avery on any census which would confirm their respective birthplaces?  They are not on the IOM 1841/1851

Necropolis Cemetery

The first burial was of one John Avery in 1827 aged 25 years of Consumption - address 24 Scotland Road.  We have decided that he was the brother of Thomas
Next came Thomas in 1829, as stated above and last amongst the Averys was another John Avery who died on the 11th April 1830 at the age of 63 years of Asthma - address Bronte Street. We feel that this must be the father of John and Thomas.

So to answer your question Carol ... no census I'm afraid !!  :-\

 Hi Annie

It was most inconsiderate of them to die before you could establish their birthplaces!!

As a surname - Avery does not feature much at all in the IOM censuses.  The 1851 for Liverpool has a Margaret Avery aged 60 b Castletown but there were no Avery's in the IOM itself

I know !!  :-\

I've been going through all available resources and was hoping Brian Lawson's site might hold a few answers ... but no !

So I'm not sure where to go from here - I'm not used to going this far back ... hence the thread !!  ;)
