Well my eyes are well and truly burnt out looking for this one.  I have searched every map i have from 1788 to 1980's but no sign of Mary Ellen street on them. I came up with the same results as Gorton-boy/Cancan and Barbara. All i could find was a mention on the 1929 directory. I am sure greater Manchester county records office will have a map & more info on that street.

My great grandma was called Isabella O´Reilley , living there with husband James , a plumber and six children. The family are at different addresses for both the 1901 and 1911 censuses .Folks in those days seemed to move house fairly regularly , probably doing  moonlight flits to avoid the rentman.

Thankyou for all your input on this , its given me a much better idea of the area they were living in.

Hi,

Whilst at Manchester Library today took a look at one of their many maps.

Whilst they cannot be photocopied. Did do a little sketch of where the Mary Ellen St was situated.  As already said on posts it was the right place!! :)

Anyone looking for places in Manchester wants to try the map department in the Central Library, I found all of the Streets I was looking for in Manchester, that have always seemed to be missing from maps.  The Staff are only to happy to help!!! ;D

Please forgive my bit of art work!!!! ::)

Wonder who all those ladies were that got the streets named after them?  Were they Haughtons or Wilkinsons perhaps?

Hi Cancan, try either useing a hosting site like one of these

http://tinypic.com/

http://load.imageshack.us/

Or if you have Photoshop make it smaller in that, or maybe you have a program called " Paint "

To make pictures smaller this is what you do. First bring up picture, and then right click on it. It comes up with a list of things you can click on. They are as follows.

Preview
Edit
Print
Refresh thumbnail
Now click on edit. It now opens a new window for you. Paint shop I think it’s called.
On the top line it has a list of things you can do. From left to right they are.
File,   Edit,   View,   Image,   Colours,    Help

Click on Image, which will give you a drop down menu of
Flip/rotate
Stretch/skew
Invert/colors
Attributes
Clean image
Draw opaque

Now click on stretch/skew. You will see a box with
Horizontal on it ,it will have a number 100 in it click on it and make it 50.
Just below this there is a box with vertical on it and a number 100 on it click on it and make it 50.
Then click, OK button. This will shut that bit and reopen paint window. Now click on close of paint shop. It will ask you if you want to . change, click yes OK.

This should have now made your picture 50% smaller , so should be able to send it ,if it is still to big do all this again OK and it will come out 50% smaller again .  OK I think you will get the hang of it now .You know if you have made it small enough because it will go on page. After you get the hang of it, play about with the numbers you change it by then so you can get as big a picture as possible. OK

Right last few things now. First of all, print this out so you can read this as you go a long OK. Second and last, just before you save picture, change original pictures file name. so you have one new picture and one original size . good luck and let me know how you get on.
