Census searching advice please
« on: Friday 01 January 10 22:22 GMT (UK) »
I guess this question may have been asked before, but i'm still quite a novice at this stuff and wondered if some of you experts may be able to help me!
I have a relative who was married in 1894 and I have a town and street name for her place of residence at the time of her marriage. I subscribe to A***ry and cannot find her on the 1891 census using a name and DOB search. Is there anyway of searching the census records using street names? Or is there another, more obvious way of tracking her down that i'm not thinking of? ???
Many thanks for any suggestions

Hi

You can't search by address on Ancestry - only on FindMyPast

If you post her full details here we will see if we can find her for you

Full name

Birthyear and birthplace

Parents names

This may work??? or not?? If you look for another name & age  on an earlier census say 1881c on the same street as with your ancestor was on ,then put that name in  your An***T* website for the 1891 c and then look around  page by page. Try a few names on different near streets aswell! I found a few that way and relatives living near.

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

depends quite a bit on the name and the area. I've managed to find some of my mistranscribed rellies in Camberwell simply by searching on first name and parent/ spouse name, with or without a range of birth dates, or birthplace. Not much good if its Mary Smith though. Give us the details, and we'll have a bash

People tended to move around a lot more in those days so 3yrs was a long time to be in the same place.  This particular person married in 1894 so could have been in service in 1891

Thank you all for your help.
The only details i have for my relly are:
Her name is Emma Hannon, aged 20 at time of marriage in May 1894. She married Hartley Whitaker at Christ Church in Colne Lancashire. Her father's name is given as John Hannon. She is said to have been living on Charles Street, presumably in Colne, (there is still a Charles street in Colne today) when she married. The 1901 census gives Emma's place of birth as Colne. She is living on Hargreaves st in Colne with Hartley and children in 1901.
I have searched many combinations on A**Y, with and without father's name without too much success. Hopefully someone may have some ideas or access to FindMyPast.
Thanks again for all your replies.

Do you have her on the 1881 census confirming her father was John?
