I am astounded by the amazing interest and information you brilliant  guys have produced!
I've been stumped by this lady for a good few months now and was beginning to wonder where to go next.
Somebody in our  family thought that previous "tree hunters" had come to a halt when they thought that Emma was orphaned. I think research tools were not as good as they are now - certainly people didn't have "super rootschatters" to help them as I have!!
The idea that Emma may have been lodging in Trawden age 17 is very plausible since her husband Hartley Whitaker and his family had very strong links with Trawden.
Can I please thank you all for your help, you've given me loads of links to explore,
Regards,

I'm not got access to the 1891c but look at other names with Emma at Trawden if she is not on her own? also pages near for relo's or fimilar surnames.

I know Trawden well!! a village above Colne and there is nowhere else of size around only Colne meaning could be relos there.

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Apologies if this sounds like a really stupid question. Can someone explain if it is possible (and how) to use the census reference numbers in the form of RG12/** etc  when searching on A****Y?
There doesn't appear to be any place to enter this type of info on the search page. Is it only possible on other sites such as FindMyPast?
Sorry again if this is a daft question,

not stupid-just learning, and apologies for not making it clear
On ancestry, go to the census search
eg 1861 http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=8767 and click on advanced search

ignore all the boxes in the search box except the bottom line
the RG number will already be filled in for you for that census year-type in the piece folio and page numbers and search-it will bring up the names of everyone on that page, so then you can view the image and get the details

Monique

Thanks again for the help with census searching. The link regarding the Irish famine is really interesting. Having ignored history as a subject as much as possible at school, searching for my ancestors has enabled me to see it in a new light!
Thank you Dobfarm for the link to lancs-opc, I have actually used this site quite a few times and have found it really useful.
I've got so much to search out now I think I might have to cancel work for the next few weeks!!!(I wish)
