Lydart ought to see this - the lady appears to be knitting socks (though no stripes)  :)

This lady has some staying power, for sure :)

If you have a chance to ask whoever has the original to rescan it with corners, and any printing on the back, please share it with us. Lovely photo, and most unusual...I've never seen knitting in an old photo before...

Cheers,

Is it knitting?  It looks like knitting, and yet it doesn't look like knitting.
she looks a bit older than 55, which she would be at the oldest going by the dates.

Actually I think she's knitting socks on 4 needles (with points at both ends) - 3 with the stitches on and 1 to knit with.  Been there done that  :)

The loose fitting bodice with the extended "skirt" over the hip was an early - mid 1870's fashion. The 3/4 pose with just the subject & a table is also from this period.
Being an older lady she may not be up to fashion as has already been said so this may be up to  late 1870's.
