 :D Thanks Geoff, that's interesting.
The baptism for Elizabeth on the IGI gives her father as Robert.

My g/grandmother Eliza, the Smith's eldest child was born c1839 according to all the census records I have on her so it might make sense that her parents married (later) in a parish where no-one knew them. Not too far from Alford and Spilsby too :-)

Not sure about the name Edward though. I might have to send for this marriage and see what the story is, if Edward is listed as a tailor it might help matters.

Thanks again, Sylvia

Perhaps the groom's and father's names became transposed.

As you have the date and place of that marriage you could order a copy from Lincs Archives.

If there are other marrriages that you would like too, I suspect you may be able to get several for the price of one certificate from GRO.  http://www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/section.asp?catid=22011&docid=75363
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Oh drats, I sent to the GRO last night  ::)
They are cheap aren't they.
Never mind will see if this is the right marriage then maybe sort out other records I need.

I found a Robert Vinter on the 1851 census age 65 Cordwainer receiving Parish Relief, that looks hopeful. Interesting also that his (possible) granddaughter (my g/gr/mother) married a shoemaker in Hull  ;D

A bit of an update
Can I have your thoughts on this please  :)
I received the marriage cert which states

August 3rd 1840, Louth
Edward Smith, full age, tailor, father Robert Smith, tallow chandler
Elizabeth Vinter full age, father Robert Vinter, shoemaker

The ONLY thing that's wrong in this picture is the first name Edward  :-\
Do you think it's the right couple please?

I can't find a birth for an Edward Smith with a father Robert, in all the census he has stated his birthplace as Spilsby
