A James Eckersley aged 49 and an electrician of 546 ST Helens Road Bolton, sailed  on 15th May 1931 on the ship called the Megantic from Southampton to Montreal .
It says country of future residence - Canada.

No one else of that surname went with him.

Having just typed all that I now realise the his name has a line through it......does that mean he didn't sail?

Well this is weird !

A man of the same name address age etc ,but an engineer travelled on the same day (15th May 1931) to Montreal, from Liverpool. On the ship The Antonia.

It would seem as though he decided NOT to go from Southampton( a long way from Bolton!) but to go via Liverpool.Again he was the only Eckersley on that trip.

OOOh Carol
I think you've found a strong possible here. This seems to be the same man who Debbie found coming back to England in 1932. Can I ask where you found the record of him sailing to Canada in 1931. I'm beginning to wonder if this might be my James. Perhaps he didn't go immediately his dad died after all, then went on his own to Canada, worked for a year then came back to get his family?
But I'm off on the speculation now - as they say on CSI stick with the evidence!
I'm going to look at that address on St. Helen's Road in 1911.
Hoey, McLuskey - Scotland & Ireland. Eckersley, Rogerson - Lancashire. McGee - Ireland, Lancashire. Barnes - Bolton, Lancs

I've found tha Candian Passenger list for him on the Antonia below.
It gives an address of 17 Evans Ave Toronto Canada, and says he's been resident in Canada between Oct 1912 and Apl 1931.

It lists him as M for married-but has no wife with him.

Gives place of birth as Bolton and age 49.

Found the ships list at first on Find My Past ,and the Canadian Passenger list on A******y .

If he really was in Canada in 1912 then maybe he married there?

Oh flippin' 'eck....

I've now found what looks very much like him with his family  :D

Travelling on the Minnedosa and arriving back in Quebec from Liverpool on 16 Nov 1920.

James Eckersley 37 Engineer been in Canada since 1910
Sarah Eckersley 35 wife  "            "     1913
Margaret Eckersley 4 born in Canada

They give a previous address of Winnipeg. He says he's been there 10 years Sarah 7 and Margaret 4.And they're all C of E.

It lists them all as British- even the child- who seems to have been born in Winnipeg.

Hopefully JJ can come up with some more Canadian info now.

I did find a death from perhaps your Rita.. Rita (Eckersley) McLeod there is something in the Torontoi Star 2000 but don't have access to it...

This is likely his entry in 1911 then, with sister Sarah?

added the marriage to above posting...
But we might have one of the James' that Karen found earlier...? http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca//Query.php
as this Winnipeg marriage: James Eckersley  to Sarah Latham...in 1913
There is also a marriage of a Peter, married the same day...

note that Karen cautioned in the first reply that there were other James Eckersley from Bolton of same age...
