Gorringe Park House in Mitcham
« on: Tuesday 05 January 10 21:59 GMT (UK) »
Recently while searching on Christings and Baptisms records for 1903 on line I found the address which looks like Gorringe Park House in Mitcham.  Then I noticed that several records had the same address and that all were adults that were baptised.  Mostly German, Polish, Russian names.  I think that the building may have been some kind of mission and now is a school.  But not sure.  Would anyone have any more information.
Thank you nasnas

The 1911 census lists it as a Home for Jews, inhabitants are Chris Kieb Traugott Lipshyts, Head, born 1859 Warsaw Russia, & Hugo Spanner, assistant, born 1866 Berlin Germany. Their occupations are Lutheran Ministers, Barbican Mission to the Jews, the description has it as Gorringe Park House (now home for Jews) next to St Barnabas Mission Church.

Hello mark 1973

Thank you for finding that information.  I believe my ancestor was German became an American citizen and settled near Mitcham with his family.  So, what you have discovered makes sense.  I was wondering if your reference books cover the Tooting area. I have been looking for information about a factory there for some time. Many thanks for your help nasnas

Hi

I am researching my family history and my great grandfather emigrated from Bavaria around 1867 to US, became an american citizen and then emigrated to UK, finally locating in the Thornton Heath/Mitcham area.  Allegedly he taught at Gorringe Park House, which makes sense as he was Jewish although his children were brought up as Christians.  I wonder if we are researching the same person?

Hello JAJ51, Thanks for your reply. Well, it does familiar and I have found someone with the name I am researching at a school, but not sure if the correct person/family. Does the name Goldstein mean anything to you.
