I think this might be wife Margaret in 1871, although the transcription comes from Ancestry with the usual issues on accuracy:

Walter Glendinning 63, farmer
Elizabeth Glendinning 64
Elizabeth Rutherford 2
Margaret Craike 67, daughter  ::), farmers widow b. Kelso
Martha McDougall 72, sister in law, b. England, Somerset
Adam Thomson 57, boarder
John Scott 39, boarder
Margaret Wilson 88, servant
Margaret Douglass 33, servant

Address: Upper Wooden, Eckford, ROX.

Possible birth entry for Margaret McDougall on IGI:

MARGARET MACDOUGAL birth 20 JUL 1804 in Kelso, Roxburgh
Parents: WILLIAM MACDOUGAL and FRANCES GIBB

Inept, there are a couple of family trees on this line on Ancestry. Those that have entries for Thomas, son, show his marriage to Marjory Helen Brewster (originally from Fife) on 6 June 1859 in Ararat, VIC, Australia.

Some possible descendants on the Craike side http://listsearches.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/ENG-NORTH-YORKS/2009-08/1249462058

There are also a number of family trees showing on Ancestry that might be worth following up on for information on the Craike family from Hovingham.

Great tag team work, Steve and Monica!

Looks like all of those morsels fit our Thomas, including the marriage at Ararat. (He may have been over there for the tail-end of the Gold Rush before trying his luck at Bendigo.)

Eyesee on RootsChat previously gave us a marriage for Thomas (b 1793) and Margaret MacDougal on 10 Oct 1824 at St James, Paddington.  A witness was James Gibb, possibly Margaret's uncle or brother-in-law.

Thomas (b 1793) was at Sprouston for the 1851 and 1861 censuses, but died prior to 1871.  Thomas (b 1834) cleared out for down-under between 1851 and 1861.

Thomas (b 1793) and Margaret bestowed the christian names Rachel (1825) and Frances (1827) upon two of their children in Southwark.  They also buried an Eleanor aged 63 in 1821 at Southwark.

Monica, your John Craike and Rachel Crozier suggestion conflicted with our previous guess of yet another Thomas and Eleanor Kirby m 24 Nov 1793 at Cripplegate.

Then Steve generously shouted me the death certificate, which showed all your research to be correct.

Monica, which arm of Ancestry should I join? UK or AU, or will it not matter?

I'm truly grateful to you both for the difference fresh pairs of eyes make.

Now I'd better get busy grafting it onto our tree!

Thank you again.

Regarding Ancestry and the type of membership to consider, it depends on what type and the location of the research you want to do. The UK membership is obviously just UK based but it gives access to other databases such as the member submitted trees. I don't know what resources it offers for Australia unfortunately or whether you research interests extend elsewhere in the world.

One possibility to consider is taking advantage of Ancestry's free fourteen day temporary membership offers which would let you have a good look around their databases before deciding (just make sure you unsubscribe in time if you decide it is not for you).

One thing to note with the Scottish records on Ancestry is that they only have access to transcripts for the censuses. Unlike the English/Welsh censuses where they also have the original images, for Scotland the original images are only available to view on Scotlands People, on the link that Steve gave earlier. However, the transcripts are useful for general searches and once you have found what you are looking for, you can then move on to Scotlands People if you want the original record for your files.

Inept, you have Thomas Snr as born c. 1793 as he shows on the 1851/61 censuses. It may be that the first Thomas showing as christened in 1789 died and name was used again by parents or indeed he was the Thomas showing as born around 1789. Hard to say, census ages are not often precise.

To find out a little more about Margaret McDougall's siblings have a look at IGI on www.familysearch.org. By doing what is called a 'parent search', you will see up to seven siblings for her. On the IGI screen, simply put in full father and mother's names on the r/h side and then at the bottom click for British Isles. All births show in Kelso.

IGI is a great free resource. Just check on the entry whether it is actual extract from official records or a member submitted entry which needs to be verified elsewhere (they can be plain wrong!). Any actual extract you find, you will be able to verify and view the original image on Scotlands People.
