Boxer?
« on: Wednesday 06 January 10 16:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm not sure which category this should go under but, my grandfather has given me some information about his father that he would like me to look into but, I don't know where to start looking.

He says that his father, John Tiplady, told him that he was a boxer between 1918-1920 in the White Chapel area and may have gone by the name of 'Young Draper'.

What I do know is that he was born in Luton, Bedfordshire in 1890, and later became apart of the travelling community.

Can anyone tell me how I would go about researching this boxing information.

Many thanks,

Paul

Having read the paragraph entitled "Evolution of Boxing" on this website I'm not surprised your ancestor went to London to try to advance himself up the ladder to the big purse prizes:

http://www.sportboxing.co.uk/

I haven't been able to find a British archive for the NBA (National boxing Association).  I've had a look at the Times online newspaper for the period 1918-1920 but it's not a sporting newspaper so doesn't mention any fixtures, names, etc.

I think your best bet would be to view old sporting newspapers such as Sporting Life or Sports Pink - there's a contact address on this website:-

Hi Paul,

Have a look at this site...  http://www.prewarboxing.co.uk/boxerlists/Dlist.htm

Draper Young - Manor Park - 3 bouts - active in the 1910's  (a little earlier than your date of 1918)

Hi Rena,

I knew of that site because my father is mentioned on it and also on the site mentioned by youngtug.

I would also suggest to Paul that it might be a good idea to have a look at the local newspapers of the time period.  I have a few clippings from my father's boxing days and they are a thrill to read. :)

Regards,
Lenagh

I popped onto this thread to try to help because my late OH used to represent the RAF in the 1950's and then in later years helped set up a boys boxing club.  I actually didn't think the professionals would be listed online but would be hidden in an archive somewhere.
