Milligan’s of Clyne Sutherland pre 1904
« on: Friday 08 January 10 15:35 GMT (UK) »
Am looking for information surrounding James and Catherine Milligan nee’ Sangester, who married pre 1904 and any more of their children.
All I currently know is that their daughter was Iris Milligan born 10 Sept 1904 at Clyne Parish Sutherland, immigrated to Canada where in 1933 she married John Herbert Oriel whose family line progress back through Canada, Bristol, Dowlais, Caldey Island to the village of Crunwear Pembrokeshire.
John H. was a Deacon of St John’s Cathedral Winnipeg and the family proceeded from there to Stillwater Minnesota.
I have been lead to believe that James Milligan worked on the estate of the Duke of Sutherland, but would not be surprised to find this is wishful thinking.
After 40 yrs historical research in Wales/England this is my 1st attempt to add background information from Scotland ~ fingers crossed.
Rgds

Hi Oriel benfro

I'm sure you'll enjoy searching in Scotland  for Ancestry ;D

Scotlands People
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
Free to Register and then Search.
Pay to view full index entries and to download documents

Very Good FAQ section
OPR and Stat. Registration certificates (great value for money but spend time perfecting manipulation of free search facilities first to lessen chance of costly mistakes).
Census (but not wholly recommeded as a source for wide general searches as it can be v. costly)Wills (to 1901)

The 1911 Scottish Census is not yet released.

Search SP Marriages:
There is 1 marriage coming up for a James MILLIGAN to a Catherine SANGSTER
Year: 1902, but it is not in Sutherland. It comes up as Midlothian

Buying this cert will give you information neccesary to progress with :
Their ages, address & occupations
The names of their parents (mother & father) and their occupations
Census records

There are a number of suitable candiates on the 1901 but would be guesswork at this stage -  whilst  I do think it's possible Cartherine is a 25 yr old visiting in Banffshire whose pob is Rogart, Sutherlandshire there are too many James MILLIGANS to poke a stick at.

Cheers  ;D

Hi Orielbenfro and Ambly  :)

There is a marriage showing in Canongate, Edinburgh in 1902 (the only one showing with the names you have) which looks to be for Iris' parents. You can view the original image of the marriage certificate on line on the pay to view official site for Scottish BMDs www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

As you said, you haven't researched in Scotland before. Scotlands People, although pay to view, is reasonable in terms of costs. For £1.20GB you can search and view the image on line (minimum purchase is £6GB for credits on SP).

Scottish marriage certs. will include full parents' names for bride and groom which will let you work back to their families.

Some other people researching the same line http://boards.ancestry.ca/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=93&p=surnames.sangster

Also, http://obitz.us/obits/Index%20K4/notesobit_k4_78.txt  From this, looks like the whole family emigrated to Canada in 1910

Over the past 40 yrs I have spent a rather large sum of money on certificates, I have them stacked in folders to prove. I'm afraid that the Milligan's are just far to distant to warrant spending further sums.
I was well aware of Scotspeople web site, and had a brief overview in conjunction with a friend of mine who is deep into Scots research.
My pension does not run to cover ancestry rates I'm afraid, I can only live in hope of finding a requirement of mutual free research. My friend can equally no longer afford the costs, even if the alternative (travel) is far more expensive.
The info supplied certainly is new and will be amended to my wish list.
Kind rgds

Hi Orielbenfro

From the first link Monica supplied, it appears you did already know Catherine SANGSTER & James MILLIGAN married in Edinburgh 1902 - is their marriage certificate one of the many you've collected?

That's a great link you've found Monica, re: Kathleen's Obit etc!  ;D  ;D

Cheers

There are family trees on Ancestry which might give you more info  :)

James Milligan is showing as born on 1873 in Thornhill, son of James Milligan and Julia Agnes Fisher. Death is given as 1952 in Calgary, Alberta.

No details on Catherine, though her birth is showing as 22 May 1875 and death in 1965 in Calgary.

A search on IGI shows this possible birth for James:

JAMES MILLIGAN Birth: 03 MAY 1873 Morton By Thornhill, Dumfries
Parents:JAMES MILLIGAN and JULIA AGNES FARISH

You can fnd the 1911 Canadian Census here for free:

The MILLIGANS are on it (view a transcript and the image - all free):

The month of birth for James snr is splodged - could be May or Mar or Nov - but the splodge does seem to indicate a 'y' might be on the end  ::)
