Bourke (NSW) Cemetery Look-up?
« on: Saturday 09 January 10 05:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi, if anyone has access to Bourke Cemetery records, or could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate  look-up for the following:

James Edward STEWART b.c.1832-d.1889 Wife Hannah STEWART nee DOODY, death date unk. but could be buried with him.

His parents were John STEWART and Harriet STEWART nee WALKER. I don't know if they came out to Australia too, but I did find a death of a Harriet STEWART in Bourke in 1876.

Any info/look-ups would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Kristy

There is only one Hannah Stewart death listed on NSW BDM, from 1800-1900

7670/1874 Hannah STEWART aged 38 years died Gladesville, Sydney.

They married in 1857, in Goulburn, south of Sydney. They had a son John in 1865 in Moulamein South West of Goulburn. Possibly also an Edward 1858 and a Charles 1863 in the general area, but with mother listed as Annie.

I've just done some maths: The above Hannah was born in  1836. James and Hannah married in 1857, so the above Hannah would have been 21 at time of marriage. So, it could be her.

Do you have the death certificate for the James, you say is buried at Bourke?

Hi Jamjar, thank you for your response.

Yes, the marriage you mentioned is mine. They had nine biological children, one adopted, and several were born in Victoria. Then some returned to NSW, some went to QLD, James went to Bourke, and I have no idea what happened to Hannah. But I do know that she was known as Annie, and that her name was actually Hanora, a good Irish name for a girl from Co.Limerick. There are several possibilities for her (since she was born c.1831, if you include deaths after 1900 there are a few more), I'm looking in QLD too as I thought that perhaps James died first, and she went to live with one of the kids. I was just hoping that maybe she was buried with James and that would make it easier for me. And no, I don't have his certificate. I have bought so many certificates for this part of the family I don't think I can justify buying another at this stage. But at some point I will have to.

I did think the Harriet who died in 1876 was mine, but not anymore, as I found a death for a sibling of hers, and his last name was also Stewart, since she was a Walker, this is another family. Possibly still a relative of some kind though. So, scratch the request for the Harriet look-up everyone :-)

Thanks again.

Cheers,
Kristy

Hi Kristy,

I recently contacted the Bourke Shire Council about cemetery records. The woman I contacted was extremely helpful, she even went out to the cemetery to take a picture of the grave.

At the bottom of the below website, there are contact details:

Cheers,

Have you tried this website austcemindex.com.  A fantastic resource, the owners of the site have gone to alot of Australian cemeteries, new and old and gather information on who is buried there.  Some of the time there is a photograph of the headstone.

hello Douglas,
  Welcome to rootschat  :)

Do you need any help with your research or are you just wanting to contact relatives.   If you do need help then it is probably better to have a separate thread.  I could ask a moderator to split this off.

If you see any probate files for your NSW ancestors http://investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/ or other files at NSW State Archives  http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/  then I can photograph these for you.

regards,
   Ros

I do not know if this is relevant or not, but maybe of interest.
Immigrant ship Aloe arrived in NSW about 3rd August 1857.

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/12998823

Listed as a passenger, Ann DOODY.
Listed as the depositor for Ann DOODY is Honorah DOODY.

Honorah DOODY and James E STEWART married in the first fortnight of September 1857, so she was still DOODY at the time of the ship's arrival.

Someone may be able to find more details o Ann DOOLY.
