Thank you all so much  :-*

terry hastie, can I be so bold and ask if the photos can be done just as they are but showing the medals please, I hope you don't mind me asking this, you done a wonderful job.  ;)

As for did he come home, I don't know just yet, still waiting to hear from his grandson, but he did have this to say....

Grandfather, John McIlwraith. I believe this photo was taken between 1915 & 1918, and before he was wounded on the Western Front. The ribbons on his tunic appear to be the WWI service medal and the 1914 ("Mons Star") or the 1914-1915 medal (as both have the same ribbon) - the colours are hard to distinguish, but the width of the stripes appear to fit, and I can't find any pre-1914 medals that would fit the bill. If it was taken after the Armitice he would also have the ribbon for the WWI Victory Medal.----------------
Does anyone know anything about the medal's he's wearing. ??  Thank you again. Bonny

I got a reply from the grandson for those of you that wanted to know if his grandfather came home.
-------------------
Hi Bonny, yes he did come home, and he served in WW2 as a merchant seaman. I've heard two stories about how he was wounded : one starts with him leading a horse with supplies towards the front, the other with him in the trenches during an attack. In the attack story, the trench collapsed under shellfire, burying him up to his neck, the trench was... See more held by the Germans for three days before the British recaptured it and he was freed. In the horse story the shell either blew him off the duckboards into the mud were the other Tommies could reach him until the mud hardened, or a wall fell on him. In all the stories, he was trapped for three days unable to move. The story also has it that soldiers passing him would kick his head (hard to believe if it was his own troops! Germans, maybe)
I gather he never wanted to talk about it, so details are probably lost forever now.

The pic was taken around 1919, and he was in a Rifle Regt...
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

He is wearing on the left as we view it, the WW1 Medal and on the right the Victory Medal.
