Ipswich St.Matthews - Bathsheba CATT
« on: Monday 11 January 10 09:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I have a Bathsheba Catt who married a James Ribbans in 1751 in Ipswich St.Matthew.
I have gauged her birth to be about 1715-20 as they had at least seven children that i know of
from 1752 - 1766 all in this parish.
My problem is that I cannot find any trace of Bathsheba but,  in the IGI for St.Matthew there are
some with the name of Ruth Parsha (x2) and Rupasha Catt.
Could one of these be the missing link having been mis-transcribed or should I continue my search?
Any advice would be welcome.

Hi,

This burial might help narrow down her DOB,

Bathsheba RIBBANS
Date of burial: 27 Oct 1797
Age: 77
Dedication: St Matthew
Place of burial: Ipswich

This would make her DOB 1720, so she would have been 31 when she married, I wonder if she was a widow?

Regards
Daisy

Hi Daisy,

Thanks fort your help.
Being a widow is a possibilty but still have not found any trace of her.

The search continues.

Hi,

I am also a decendent of James Ribbans and Bathsheba Catt. I found some information that clears up where she was from. She was Ashkenazi Jewish.

Bathsheba Catt's real name was in fact Batsheba (Bathsheva) Katz - born in Belarus in 1720. She moved to Ipswich to escape the Anti-Semitism in the area. Her last known residence before Ipswich was Hlybokaye, Belarus.

This was found on the JewishGen Yizkor Necrology index. https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/jgdetail_2.php

Hi pigeonpie56,

I'm sorry I haven't acknowledge your message before now. Internet problems which only now seem to be over.

I'm interested in your suggestion that Basheba came from  Belarus. What you say makes her a strong possibility  - how or where do you fit into the tree as you say you are a descendant of James & Bathsheba?

Will be very interested to hear more from you.

Alan

Hi Alan,

Thank you for your reply! This is how James & Bathsheba connect into my family. They connect in from my maternal grandfather's line, making them my 5th Great-grandparents.

James Ribbons -- Batsheba Katz (Catt) had many children, one of which was William Ribbans. (1756 to 1833)

He married a lady called Elizabeth Canham (1757 to 1813); one of their daughters, Hannah E Ribbans (1795 to 1847) married my 3rd great-grandfather Samuel Studd Clarkson (1795 to 1826.)

The connection then narrows itself down my maternal grandfather's line, his surname was Clarkson as well. I'm having a great deal of difficulty in finding anything about them though.
