Does Francis's marriage certificate give an occupation for his father John? If we know what work he did it might help with where to look for Francis's birth ...  :-\ eg military?  :-\

No, sadly Francis's marriage cert has no more info about his parents.
Shame they weren't born in Victoria, Aus. What gr8 record keeping.

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?r=554&402
 - you should check the "Foreign Returns" at Scotlandspeople

I found a Walter Scott Allan on the WWI Canadian army attestations, who was b. 1868 in Penang and was resident in BC (wife Edith Lillian)
search here: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/index-e.html

In 1911 he is listed as "Scott Allan" in BC, with wife Edith and daughter Irene (b. Burma); they came to Canada in 1908.

http://members.shaw.ca/nanaimo.fhs/V006.pdf - shows W. Scott Allan aged 40 on the Virginian, arrived 15 Sep 1908.

www.familysearch.org shows "John George Allan" in 1866 and "Walter Scott Allan" in 1868 as children of John and Lucy Margaret.

Also search http://newspapers.bl.uk/ for "John Allan" and then within those results for "Penang"; you'll have to pay to get full info but there look to be quite a few hits.

Are you sure he died in 1944?

Ringwood is covered by Christchurch RD.  There is this death registered in Christchurch in 1Q 1950:

Francis M Allen              Aged  70               6b 231

I think in the 1911 Canadian Census column 14 is Tribal or Racial Origin and 15 is Nationality.

I woke up this morning thinking about you being unable to find Francis's d/c. (sad that this is my first thought upon waking  :P)

Anyway, I see there have been a few developments since I was online last night.  :)

I was going to ask how you knew he'd died in 1944 but were unable to find his d/c?

I was also going to ask if you'd searched for him using the forename Maxwell?

I was wondering what information a Canadian d/c included? Is it like the Australian ones which give parent's names, place of birth etc?

Hi again,

Sean, I am just wondering about the death being 6 years out AND a misspelling of Allan being Allen - I haven't come across that issue before but suspect it is worth ordering the certificate just in case it is the one.

Family members have told me that he died in 1954 so I have gone along with that date!

Re Canadian marriage certs they have less information than our Aussie ones, but at least they do list the names of the parents, but not their occupations.

And yes, Ruskie I spend far too much time thinking about this guy - trying to crack his story is fascinating and intriguing and I won't rest until I do!

Re all the other hints on looks ups, I have written to the COE church in Penang, St George's to see if they have any indexed records as it is likely that the Allans would have worshipped there.

Many thanks

Diana
