Arthur Moore, Royal Field Artillary
« on: Monday 11 January 10 13:43 GMT (UK) »
Arthur Moore was born on 23 April 1892, probably in Birmingham. He participated in and survived the First World War where he served in either the Royal Jorse Artillary or the Royal Field Artillary.

How would I find his military service record?

Thanks,
Simon

Hi Simon

There are 54 Arthur Moore's with medal cards for WW1 who served with the artillery. They do however include the Royal Garrison Artillery.

Using his year of birth comes up with no pension or service records on Ancestry, who served with the RA, So it looks as if his were destroyed during WW2. If you have an address for him you could try finding him on the electoral roll. The one for 1918-19 may give his number.

I think Birmingham produced a roll of honour after the war. This was a book that people paid to record their service. It includes survivors as well as those killed. Or you could try and find a notice in his local newspaper from the time of his death. It may give some details. If he married or had any children you should order the certificate as again, his number may be given. Other than that you should ask around the family for any letters, postcards, army forms etc.

Thank you very much Ken. Arthur Moore was from Birmingham, so there might be a chance he is in that book you mentioned. He married in Harbourne in December 1917 and died in Nottingham in 1960.

Hi Simon

Doesn't the marriage certificate give anything useful?

A photograph has just come to light - hopefully someone might be able to identify something on the uniform.

On his left forearm he wears one wound stripe, one good conduct chevron (so at least 2 years service) and a Gunlayers proficiency badge.
Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.

Thank you for that. Does mean Arthur was more likely to have been in the Royal Field Artillary than the Royal Horse Artillary?

Do you have a date for the wedding? The wound stripe was introduced in 1918, and the RA moved the lanyard to the right shoulder in 1920. So 1918 or 1919 is favourite. The bad news is that the good conduct chevron usualy means a career soldier so his service record could still be with the MOD. And they usually require his regimental number.
