« on: Monday 11 January 10 14:37 GMT (UK) »
 :)
Hi could anyone help with tracing the parents or any backwoods link of the above (a great grandfather).
I cant find him in the 1901 census and in the 1911 he appears
as an inmate of the School of Handicraft for Poor Boys, Chertsey, Surrey.
His year of birth is given as 1898 but we think it was 1899
place of birth given as Addlestone.

We live overseas and have been using ancestry.com as well as find my past to search.

Thnaks very much for any help.  ???

Hi

I was going to suggest you contact the Surrey History centre at Woking as they may hold some information on the pupils. http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/sccwebsite/sccwspages.nsf/LookupWebPagesByTITLE_RTF/Surrey+History+Centre?opendocument

I have also found
http://www.surreyherald.co.uk/surrey-news/nostalgia-history/2008/07/23/where-are-the-handicrafts-boys-now-86289-21390541/

Do you have his marriage certificate as that may give his fathers name.

Hi Rosie

Thanks very much for the info - I'm not too well up on researching if its not on ancestry.com or find my past ( they make the past easy to understand)

We dont have a copy of his married certificate although we do know he married twice
once to a Doris Marie Rees in 1922 at Islington middlesex and they had a son Kenneth Percy in 1924 in Edmonton
Doris died - not sure why or when or where
and Percy remarried in  1947 at Maryleborne to a Elsie May Bristow / Marshall (she was a widow?)
They then went onto have / adopt two more children Robert and Francis

Unfortunately thats all we know as Kenneth didnt keep in touch with his father or his step brother and sister. They and he moved around alot too.

I presume he was at the School for Poor boys due to his father or both his parents having died.

Which is the cheaper / best item to obtain a copy, his birth or marriage cert?
Can you obtain it online anywhere as our post is not very reliable?

Thanks very much for your help again

Have you had a look for a military service papers for WW1?  On Ancestry there is the service papers for a Percy W Sawyer, serving in the 14th London Regiment (the London Scottish - incidently the same one my Gfather was in).  There is also a medal card for him.  I haven't looked through all the documents associated with his service record, but I think on some there are boxes for Next of Kin.

Hi Spidermonkey

Many thanks for the tip to check his service records.
Found him and went through all the documents.

Seems he lied about his age on joining up and there was a letter from his mother, (our g-g grandmother!) asking him to be discharged on compassionate grounds. She needed him as he had no living father and they worked together to make ends meet.( I think he joined up without her permission) The request was denied and he went off the France where he was shot 3 months after arriving and returned to the Uk for treatment spending a month in hospital.

The information on his service was amazing, I even managed to get the first name of his mum and his actual date of birth. Now I can start going backwards to trace the family further.

Many many thanks

Margaret and Roger Sawyer
