Exhibition at the Genealogical and Heraldic Museum
« Reply #9 on: Sunday 04 May 08 05:39 BST (UK) »
Do any of the Dublin members know what has happened to the Genealogical and Heraldic Museum? It's the only museum of its kind in the world. According to an article in the March/April edition of "History Ireland" the National Library of Ireland are staging an exhibition in the building which is a couple of doors away from the main Library. www.homeandabroad.com/c/41/Site/48592_Heraldic_Museum_Genealogical_Office_visit.html

The exhibition "Strangers to Citizens - the Irish in Europe 1600-1800" concentrates on the emigration of the Irish pre the Great Famine as this has been a major part of Irish history since the sixteenth century. Academics, members of the aristocracy, unemployed members of the military and ministers of religion all emigrated from Ireland at one time or another.

Marsh Library Dublin
« Reply #11 on: Tuesday 01 July 08 18:26 BST (UK) »
Marsh's Library, built in 1701 by Archbishop Narcissus Marsh (1638-1713), was the first public library in Ireland. It was designed by Sir William Robinson (d.1712) the Surveyor General of Ireland, and is one of the very few 18th century buildings left in Dublin that is still being used for its original purpose. The Library still contains the wired alcoves (cages) where readers were locked in while they studied rare books. www.marshlibrary.ie

The documents and records held by TCD include those for the Incorporated Society for Promoting Protestant Schools in Ireland. In these are the return of apprentices for the period 1744-1879. Would these relate to students entering an apprenticeship when they left school?  www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/nra/searches/subjectView.asp?ID=O28478

This is a new archive which contains information on former pupils’ service with both the Irish and British armed forces. Among the past pupils of the college was Kevin Barry, the IRA Volunteer who was executed in November 1920. Please send any enquiries by post.

The site shows former Old Belvederians who received a Knighthood. If anyone knows of other Knights or can add to the Museum archivist's knowledge of the any of the Knights on the list please get in touch with the Museum. www.belvederecollege.ie/Museum1.htm
