LDS - anyone have access to microfiche?
« on: Friday 15 January 10 00:50 GMT (UK) »
Hello.

Don't know if I can post this here .... looking to see if someone lives close to an LDS who can do a look up for me?

I am looking for 1866-1867 births in Grenada.  There is a listing here:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=titlefilmnotes&columns=*%2C0%2C0&titleno=393177&disp=Civil+registration++

I am looking to see if on the 1866 or 1867 index or registrations if
Gerald Davis Humphreys is listed - he was the son of George and Catherine Humphreys.

Thanks so much!

Hi Lorraine

The microfiches are not kept at the local LDS offices, they have to be ordered in at a cost (can't remember what it is at the moment).  When my husband wanted to view some microfiche, our "local" office which is 15 miles away insisted that he went to the office to order the microfiche and then return when they had arrived.

I'm sure someone may be able to help you, but it isn't free.

Lizzie

Films in the UK are now £7 for 3 months - I assume it's the same for fiche.

My 'local' LDS centre accepts orders by mail with a cheque.  More convenient for me as it's a 45 mile round trip.

You can find your nearest centre from the familysearch website.

I'm waiting for some fiches coming in at my local LDS centre and I paid a princely 35p. Am I right in thinking that they keep fiches once they have them ?

I think you're right Angelfish, or at least it was the last time I ordered fiche.  As you say, very cheap, and they're not returned to Distribution, but kept at the Family History Centre.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I think it depends on how  many copies of the fiches there are.  Our local office has quite a few fiches but still had to order in the ones my OH wanted to view.  When they arrived, he had only a week to view them before they had to be sent back.  The local office said that time limit was quite difficult for some people, especially those who worked but said their hands were tied, it was the London HQ who made the rules.

Thanks Lizzie, I hadn't heard that, I shall have to be on the ball then when they eventually come in.

Thanks Lizzie, I hadn't heard that, I shall have to be on the ball then when they eventually come in.

The short timescale to view had something to do with the local office only being allowed a short time (2 or 3 weeks I think) to return the fiches, but the time started from when the fiches were despatched from London, so if they took a couple of days to arrive at the local office and then you take out the weekends when the local office is closed and the time taken to send them back, there was very little time for someone to view the fiches.
