william morris alias rendall
« on: Friday 15 January 10 19:50 GMT (UK) »
i have a relative who was born in marshwood dorset in 1806

in some of the cencus in dorset he is known as william rendall and in others william morris.

his marriage certificate shows as william morris or rendall.  very strange.!

I can't find his parents even though I know he was born in marshwood dorset in 1806.

He married Ruth Pomeroy in Symmondsbury and appeared to live in Marshwood up until 1861.

There is also no record of his death.

Can anyone shed any light on this mysterious character?  many thanks

Maybe his parents were not married, or his mother re-married and he used a step-father's name.

Have you looked at the Marshwood records in the unindexed format?

When did he wed Ruth and what what names witness?
(kids on census imply there should only be the parish record-  no certificate)

Hello Eve,

Welcome to RootsChat !  :)

Did you find William in 1881, if so could this be his death ?

Death, Jun qtr 1883
William Rendell, age  77
Beaminster, Vol 5a, page 265

In 1871 he was living with Ruth in the above registration district and
appears to have named William Rendall in 1851, 1861 and 1871, but Morris
in 1841 ?

Kind regards,

Pels.

Still trying to confirm the death I found .. and in answer to my own query. I've located Ruth and I'm wondering if William was in the workhouse in 1881 ??  :(

RG11/2120, Folio 122, Page 24

Might be completely wrong ?

hi Pels

thanks for getting back tome.

i'm not sure if i put all the details on the original request.

ruth was showing living with a grandchild in 1871 but not showing as widow.  which means he was alive somewhere but didn't know where.

if he was the one in the workhouse how can we tell if he is the same one?

regards

Hi again eve,

ruth was showing living with a grandchild in 1871 but not showing as widow.  which means he was alive somewhere but didn't know where.

I think this was a typing error and you'd intended to say Ruth was not showing as a widow in 1881 .. William was with Ruth in 1871.

Here's me thinking I'd made a huge mistake !  :-[ ;D

Just going to check again on the workhouse entry.  :)
