I'd ask the mods to move this to Dublin - you'd probably get some help there!

There are records in both Kew and Dublin of RIC people - probably DMP too.

Hi

I've checked the standard reference works:

(1)
Jim Herlihy, The Dublin Metropolitan Police: A complete Alphabetical List of Officers and Men , 1836-1925.
Noting found for John Pearce or similar

(2)
Jim Herlihy, The Royal Irish Constabulary: A complete Alphabetical List of Officers and Men , 1816-1922.
Entries found:
John Pearce, Service No. 75456
William John Pearse, Service No. 69886

The service no. for John Pearce corresponds to an entry date to the force of Oct-Dec 1920 - much too late for the man of interest. The Pearse entry corresponds to Feb-Apr 1920.

Not promising, unfortunately. Perhaps he was a constable in England ?

regards

Gerry

Hi Deevla

Unfortunately the Herlihy index reference give no more information than you have already - it doesn't give the date of entry to the force - you need to look up the actual records to get that.

However, Appendix 1 of the book gives a correlation between Service Numbers and Date of Appointment which ties down the period in which a man joined:

Service No. 8564; 1 Jan 1880
Service No. 8674; 1 Jan 1881

So, it would seem that John Phelan joined the force in late 1880.

best regards

Gerry

there's a John Phelan listed as a station sergeant at C-Division, Store Street station in Dublin (DMP) in 1889. There's no service number mentioned - but he could be the same one..

The other sergeants at the station are at that time are Thomas Lawler and John Cooke

I see that this post is from quite some time ago but I am looking to trace relatives of the late John Phelan, Dublin Metropolitan Police Office referred to by Deevla above.  I was wondering if Deevla could possibly contact me as I am aware of another direct descendant of John Phelan and I am hoping to get some more information on his descendants.
Thank you,
Mairead

Just for completeness, John Phelan DMP 8648 was assigned to Division F on 12 November 1880.
DMP General Register is here: https://digital.ucd.ie/view/ucdlib:53467
It's not searchable, but once you get the man's service number you can browse the images to find him.
