The Jurist
« on: Saturday 16 January 10 23:49 GMT (UK) »
I've found my relative's name, Daniel Buckle, of Upper Baker Street, Pentonville, in a copy of the Jurist. I know this was a publication re bankruptcy etc but his name doesn't appear at the front in the Gazette of Bankrupts. Here's the link:

http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=30owAAAAIAAJ&pg=PA172&dq=daniel+buckle&lr=&cd=11#v=onepage&q=daniel%20buckle&f=false

He's on page 172. Can anyone tell me what exactly this means? Was he actually bankrupt?

Many thanks

Further to my  previous post I have now found a report of this in the Times 19/5/1849 with details of the Bankruptcy Court and the Insolvent Debtors Court. Under the Insolvent Debtors Court are "Final Orders", "Adjourned Hearings" and "Original Protection" under which the name Daniel Buckle appears. I'm totally confused now as to whether he was declared bankrupt or given something similar to today's IVA.

Well did you read the worsd on the bottom of the page preceding his entry?

He had , along with all the others, applied to the court for "interim Orders of Protection from Process"

Presumably he was trying to stop the bankruptcy going ahead. He was to reappear in court on the dates mentions for further examination of his case.

Later reports may clarify whether he was infact made bankrupt.

He was certainly in the system though and once in it is hard to get out of unless he or someone else was prpared to pay all his debts.

Yes I did read the words at the bottom of the preceding page but was unsure as to what they meant, hence my post.

The only other report I can find is the one in The Times where he was given "Original Protection". Again, I'm unsure as to what this means.

I don't know where to search now so any ideas would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Have you looked at the National Archives site

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Several mentions of that name in there. Court records if they are available  might also be another avenue to explore.

But I would have expected a report  of the final outcome to appear in teh press.

Hi Robyn

Yes I had looked there. The name mentioned is his father, also Daniel, and appears to be mainly insurance records. Like you, I thought there would've been a report in the newspapers but I've looked in the British Library papers on-line with no luck although I did find other things of interest  :).

I'm out of ideas as to where else to look.

Many thanks for your help.
