R.U.C. QUESTION
« on: Sunday 17 January 10 22:09 GMT (UK) »
Hello from Spain. :)

Can anyone confirm this:

If you were born in Co Tyrone, you could not serve in RUC-in that county!!
This is what I have been told.
Anyone  out there able to answer this for me PLEASE.

IT WOULD MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE ::) in my search area for grandfathers birth :'(
BASICALLY BACK TO SQUARE ONE!!

Adios

not sure about the RUC.
It's true for the RIC up to 1922 - and they were usually moved after marriage, as they weren't supposed to serve in their wife's native county either. (Jim Herlihy's book p. 143)

Hi eadoin :)

Thanks for your reply.

The problem I have is searching for birth of paternal grandfather-who was in the RUC,  in Tyrone( I do not know for sure if it was in Auchnacloy its self)

Then if this info is correct- about not serving in birth county-then I have been barking up the wrong tree ::)
I should be looking else where for a birth .

The problem I have had,is the death cert in 1958 says he was 60 years old,and in Tyrone there isn't a birth in 1898-the nearest is 1896.
Hopefully there maybe a retired RUC OFFICER in the forum who could clarify this point.

Many thanks and Happy New Year

do you know when he joined-up? have you found his service record?

If he joined at 18ish, he'd have joined the RIC (and then transferred to RUC), and you could find his service number, and some of his movements upto 1922.(maybe you already have all this!)

would you like to post his name here?

Hi eadoin :),

As far as I can tell from  last child born to them,in 1925 he was a dealer as he was back as far as 1916.
So assume he joined  after 1925-   also  my mother  told that he was B Special, they were part time,so maybe he did that as well as being dealer.

If he joined after 1926,this means he was  in RUC, and been told that records sealed for 100 yrs-so that means I am jiggered ::)

I hesitate to post his name as I have posted on him on this site- and do not want to upset anyone- but you can find it under Alexander Robinson, cant remember whether I posted his middle name now-sorry it was Harold.

From his death cert , he died in 1958,and his age is down as 60-so around 1898- but what county- originally I had thought he was Tyrone man-but if a serving officer couldn't serve in his birth county then it could be anywhere.
Sadly, no- one alive to ask. :'(

Adios

 Thanks Everyone,

Have been informed that-AFTER 1922, those rules did NOT apply.
