Browning of Ford, Salop
« on: Monday 18 January 10 10:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am hoping that someone can help. I am trying to find early records of George Browning b. 1820 (all I know was that he was born in England) died 1874 (Forgue, Scotland)

He re-married as a widower in 1862 to Ellen Taylor of Hackney, and on the wedding certificate his address is given as "Ford, Salop" his occupation was "Inspector, Inland Revenue" with his father mentioned as William Browning (occupation farmer). I cannot find any pre 1871 census or birth records, or first wedding for George and I would love to find William, his father.

All the best

Chris

In the 1841,  I've found a William and Mary Browning living in Sandwich but William is a labourer.

I'll give the details, just in case:

St Peter, Sandwich
HO107/494/16/17/27

Browning
William, 55, labourer
Mary, 50
Ann, 15

All b. Kent

Hi

Thank you so much for looking at this. The Sandwich, Kent reference looks very promising as this is where is 2nd wife settled after his death in the 1870's (also the Inland Revenue Inspector occupation makes it likely that it could be him)

Hi Chris

I think you missed my posting - I'd already found them  :D

I think if I were you I'd put up a request on the Kent board for a possible baptism of George in Sandwich circa 1821

There is an OPC for Kent but it doesn't look as if the baptisms are up for St Peter, St Clement or St Mary,  Sandwich:

Hi Gadget

Specsavers time for me!

I will try the Kent posting as you suggest, but there is still a mystery as to George's marriage certificate stating that he lived in Ford in 1862 as I can't find an 1861 record for him. I have to admit though that the "Salop." reference threw me as I am not sure under which county the records would now appear. I always thought that it meant Shropshire.

After their marriage he went to Scotland as a Revenue collector at a distillery so perhaps he traveled or was working in connection with distilling or brewing at the time?
