I wonder if the surname is originally French?

Much appreciated Mary and Laurina, I would never have been able to trace the line further back without your help. Thank you both for your time.

Laurina

Laurina, my nan mentioned to me once that she thought the name was French, it does have a French ring to it, its just finding the records to prove any ancestrs emigrated.

Do you know of any passenger lists that I could check?

Thanks.

I'm sorry but I've no idea on passenger lists from France - it's so close they could probably have come across fairly easily.

Feels French to me although nothing much to base the feeling on.

If Laurina is right about the siblings, and she probably is, other siblings may have also moved to London

Marriage in St Pancras Parish Church, Camden,
of Richard Bowden of the parish of St George, Bloomsbury, Bachelor
and Sophia Matilda Bertout of this Parish, Spinster
married by Licence on 26th July, 1826.
Both signed their names
Witnesses Mary Bertoutt and Jean Bertout - both signed

I might as well give details of the other couple of marriages, perhaps you could keep them on file as you never know when you may connect with them.

St Mary Newington, Southwark
John Bertout of this parish, Bachelor
Elizabeth Dadge of this parish, Spinster
by Banns, on 5th October, 1828
Both signed
Witnesses Henry Quelch? James Toole? Emma Dadge, Keziah Quelch
all signed

This one is interesting - could it be an older sister to Nathaniel?
St James Paddington, Westminster - 28th March, 1842
Nathaniel Preston of full age Bachelor Dairyman, address Praed Street, father Joseph Preston, Butcher
Susannah Bertout Minor Spinster Harrow Road, father James Bertout, Gardener
Both made their mark
Witnesses James S? Bennett and Sarah Eldridge?

I'm thinking you might read up about Huguenots.

I'll see what I can dig up.

Thanks.

Sophia Matilda Bertout married Richard Bowden in 1826 They had a daughter Matilda Elizabeth Bowden who married James Carlton - there is an image for the marriage on An*****y which I can't view -

maybe someone else can help here?[/color]

Sophia Matilda Bowden is living with Matilda in the 1881 census - both have lost their husbands.

Sophia Matilda Bowden dies in 1Q 1883 Steyning, Sussex 2b 194 - aged 79
