John McIvor
« on: Friday 22 January 10 15:13 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace John McIvor (my g.g.grandfather) born about 1843, died between 1905 and 1920 and according to the 1881 census (this is the first record found of him) was born in Durham, South Shields (we had understood he came from Harris / Lewis) so this was a surprise.  I can find no birth, marriage or death certificate for him in either Scotland or England.  He was married to Annie Collier who came from Cloughton, Scarborough (listed as Nancy in 1881 census) and she died in Glasgow in 1929 after moving there from West Derby, Lancs.  He had 3 children - 2 boys and 1 girl.  He was a musician (flautist) and possibly a teacher (head?) and possibly has the middle name of Henry.

There are lots of John McIvors from around the same birth year in Lewis/Harris but as I dont know his parents names or siblings, I dont know if I have the right one.

If anyone has come across him, please let me know.

Hello

In the third quarter of 1873, there is a marriage registration at Sheffield for a John McIvor and a Nancy Collier. The GRO reference is 9c 724.

The marriage certificate should provide both fathers' names and possibly other useful information.

The son, Henry P McIvor, was born in 1874 at Sheffield.

Thanks for that.  Sounds like the right person - Henry P is my g.grandfather.  Looks like I am going to have to order a copy of their certificate.

Defo the right person then as I have already got that information and more, just trying to get a bit further back.  Thanks once again.  Do you know why Nancy would become Anne?   I have traced her family back too and the only mention of Nancy is the 1881 census and the info you gave me for marriage - she is listed as Ann/e in earlier census for the Collier family?

In the first quarter of 1844 there is a birth registration at South Shields for a John McEvar. The GRO registration is 24 201.

I wonder if this could be him ?

Do you know why Nancy would become Anne?

Nancy was a frequently used alternative for Anne.

Thanks for that, never came across the Nancy/Anne thing before but have heard of a Nan being a version for both.

The John Mcevar sounds interesting will look into that too.

Thanks.
