*Completed*MAJOR family members in New York
« on: Saturday 23 January 10 12:21 GMT (UK) »
I would really appreciate help in finding the following members of the MAJOR family in1850 and subsequent censuses. I haven't been able to spot them in the indexes:

Emma MAJOR, born in England in 1814. Probably died in 1853
Sarah MAJOR, born in England in about 1790. Probably died in 1873
John (or Jno) H MAJOR, born in England in 1823. No sign at all.

I have managed to find several other members of this family in New York, principally in Brooklyn, so any sightings of them would be most welcome.

Thank you.

Many thanks for this Yvonne.

Certainly these people are related to the Richard and James we found before. Henry was a brother and Ellen (married to Napoleon SARONY) was a sister.

The Sarah must have been their mother - the father (also named Richard) died in 1844. Can you see Sarah in 1860 or 1870, since she died in 1873?

John H was definitely a different person - John Harvey - I can see in the indexes a Jno H MAJOR born 1820. That's not him is it?

Kind regards

Phil

Yes! the Jno H Major age 30 in 1850 looks like he is right! Wife Julia age 28 and daughter Emily age 2. His occupation is Musician. In later census he is enumerated as Harvey.

Also do you have the passenger list for the Major's in 1833 arriving New York on the ship Cosmo?

Richard age 44, Sarah age 45 and Ann 21, Jane 19, James 13, Henry 11,  Louisa 10, Rich(ard) 8, Harvey 7 and Ellen 2

Cannot seem to find Sarah in 1860 or 1870!

Best

Yvonne

Thanks again Yvonne. You have identified yet another member of the MAJOR family - John Harvey or Harvey Major - along with his wife Julia, so I feel I am really building up a great picture of this family.

I am delighted to have the passenger list for the Cosmo, which for the first time indicates which members of the MAJOR family actually came from England to America in 1833. However I was surprised that Emma (born in 1816) didn't seem to be with the rest of the family. Is that correct? If she wasn't with them, then when and how did she come to the US?

Thanks so much for all your help; it is very much appreciated.

Kind regards

Philip
