married Jane Rimell on 16 Feb 1846 at St Pancras, London; Samuel Pateman
full age bachelor labourer of Kentish Town father John Pateman labourer;
and Jane Rimell full age spinster of Kentish Town father James Rimell
labourer. Witnesses John Yates and Caroline Keep (Samuel's sister).26. He died
in the June quarter 1865 at St Pancras. Jane remarried William Mottley in 1872,
and was living him as Jane Motley in 1871
He appeared on the census of 30 Mar 1851 at St Pancras, London; Samuel
Paterson head marr 31 labourer b Langford; Jane Paterson wife 25 b St
Pancras; Richard Paterson son 4 b St Pancras; Samuel Paterson son 2 b
Lambeth Surrey.27 He appeared on the census of 7 Apr 1861 at St Pancras,
London; Samuel Bateman head marr 33 ground labourer; Jane Bateman wife 30;
Richard Bateman son 14; Samuel Bateman son 11; Ellen Bateman dau 6; James
Bateman son 6; Caroline M Bateman dau 1; William Bateman son 9. All b St
Pancras (the ages of Samuel and Jane are obviously wrong as is Samuel's
birthplace).28

St Pancras, London.29 She was christened on 4 Jun 1854 at
St Pancras, London.30 She married Joseph Briars, son of
William James Briars and Kezia Pateman, on 24 Dec 1873 at
Old St Pancras, London; Joseph Briars full age bachelor
labourer of St Pancras father William James Briars
labourer; and Ellen Pateman full age spinster of St
Pancras, father Samuel Pateman labourer. Witnesses William
Grimes and Maria Legate (Joseph's sister).31
8. James PATEMAN was christened on 23 Mar 1817 at Langford, Beds.32
He married Mary Franklin, daughter of John Franklin and Sarah Pear, on 12
Feb 1839 at Langford, Beds; James 22 father John Pateman; Mary 21 father
John Franklin.33 (Mary Franklin's brother Thomas was a bigamist - see

He appeared on the census of 6 Jun 1841 at Sacombe, Herts; living in
the household of the Whiteman family were:
Joseph Keep 25 labourer; James Pateman 25 labourer; Caroline Keep 20
Independent. None born in Herts. Sacombe is 5 miles from Stevenage. Joseph
Keep and Caroline Pateman married the following year. But who is James
Pateman? Caroline's brother James appears to have married Mary Franklin and
was living with her family in Stevenage in 1841. Could he have been
enumerated twice? Or is this James the son of Joseph who was baptised on 21
May 1820 and who married in Langford in 1845. Age looks wrong though, and
this James age 20 was living with his parents Joseph & Mary in Langford.34
He appeared on the census of 6 Jun 1841 in the household of William James
Briars at Pin Green, Stevenage, Herts; William James Briars 20 ag lab;
Kezia Briars 20; Charles Pateman 4; Mary Pateman 20; James Pateman 20;
Henry Pateman 14 mths. Only William was born in Herts.35 He appeared on
the census of 30 Mar 1851 at Church Croft, Stotfold, Beds; James Pateman
head marr 33 costermonger b Langford; Mary Pateman wife 32 b Langford;
Henry Pateman son 10 scholar b Langford; John Pateman son 7 scholar b
Stotfold; Charles Pateman son 3 b Stotfold. Living in the next house to
James Franklin 27, Mary's brother.36 He appeared on the census of 7 Apr
1861 at Stotfold, Beds; James Pateman head marr 43 dealer in plait b
Langford; Mary Pateman wife 42 b Langford; Henry Pateman 21 son unmarr b
Langford; Charles Pateman son 13 b Stotfold; Sarah Franklin widow 66 b
Brookend Beds.37
