Hi Kate
This must be the one where Charles PATEMAN was the Beer Shop Keeper in 1861 (previous topic)?

To clarify for Herts. locals  - it was in Hertford St Andrew, at Port Hill described so:

District 7
part of the parish of St Andrews Hertford comprising the South side of
Maidenhead Street from the Green Dragon to house occupied by Will(iam?)
ENGLAND, the north side of Maidenhead Street from house occupied by
Mr G MUNDAY to house occupied by Edward McMULLEN, Maidenhead
---rd?, the East side of the Wash and Mill Bridge up to Old Cross all the
---xcept the house occupied by Samuel Cousin McMYMAN & Mr Saun(ders?)
(t?)an Yard, Hartham Lane, Hartham, Cowbridge, Port Hill from Cowbridge to Burial
Ground, the North East side of Port Vale, from Cowbridge to house occupied
by Mr HAWKINS , the South West side of Port Vale from Cowbridge to
house occupied by Mr SIGGINS, the North side of St Andrews Street
from the Old Cross to the Cold Bath, Hills Yard and Beerhouse ---------?

I only live a few miles from Hertford.  I dont think this pub still exists but the name does sort of ring a bell.  Much of Hertford still retains many of it's fine old buildings so even if no longer a pub the building might still exist.  There is a book on Hertfordshire pubs but I cant recall the title.  Doesn't have pics or anything and only basic info but as it was in Hertford might give an address or a more precise indication of location.  Contact Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies.  They have a copy of it on their bookshelves and if you are lucky some kind sole might look it up for you.

Charles Pateman was certainly a beer shop keeper in 1861, he died in 1875 but his wife kept the business on and she was listed as a beer shop keeper herself in subsequent census's untill 1901.
It is at 67 Rivington Street, Shoreditch still a lively drinking area and it is now a takeaway.
He is a relation and I would be pleased if anyone else had information to share with me
