Looking for my grandma
« on: Monday 25 January 10 08:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi to anyone, can you help me with some information on how to find where my g'ma was laid to rest, I have quite a lot of details but this is the last link and I cannot find where she is. This was in 1919, she committed suicide by laying down in front of a train on the Somerset and Dorset railway line, leaving 8 children, it is such a sad tale that i feel I must now find where she is. Thanks Gill.

Was her death mentioned in the local newspaper? Perhaps a date and place of burial is given? A bit of a long shot, but it might be worth a check.

Hello Steve,
Thanks for your reply, yes I received from the Somerset studies library a copy of a long write up from The Somerset Guardian Nov 14th 1919.
I contacted the paper to see if there were any obits from that time and was told all old papers are now in Bath library, so that will be my next place to look.

Hi Gill

I'm not sure when the rules changed, but if someone committed suicide they were not allowed to be buried in consecrated ground- ie the churchyard. People used to be buried in the land just outside the church boundaries.

Hopefully someone with some local knowledge of the area might be bale to advise you better.

Very sad story though- sounds like she was suffering from post natal depression?

Carol

Yes I should think that's what we would call it and have more compassion these days, the last baby, who was my uncle is dead now and never knew his mum, his wife is still alive, but they never went back to visit.

Hello Nigel,
her name was Ada Naish nee Woodland, she was born in 1876 sorry not sure of the date.
She was the wife of John Willie Naish they lived in Midsomer Norton. Her death cert. was registered in Clutton application number 1585026-1
She died on Nov 7th 1919 and her inquest was on Nov 10th 1919.
Thanks Gill.

HI Gill
I have searched the copy I have of the National Burials Index - 2nd Ed. There may be a later copy no I think but.....

I searched under
Ada,
Naish
Nash
Woodland
and various combinations of these and.....

No entries.

Interestingly in Somerset in 1919 only 1 Ada was recorded and she was buried on 16 Oct 19 and I only found one NAISH in the time period 1918 -1920 that was for Kathleen Lilian NAISH age 3 Bur 6 July 1918 at St Andrews Clevedon.

So I'm sorry I can't offer more but you may have to write / go to the most likely church /chapel and see if they have any records that may help?

Good luck
