Thomas Franklin - Bethnal Green London
« on: Monday 25 January 10 15:36 GMT (UK) »
my great grandmother Emily Barklamb married Thomas Franklin in 1893.  my grandmother was born the same year.  Thomas disappeared in 1900 supposedly back to his first wife.  The only facts I have of him is he was born in 1864, he may have had Alfred as his second name, he was a printer and his father was also Thomas.  Has he cropped up in anyone's family tree?

Hi

Consistently Thomas on the records. The 1881 and 1901 censuses can be searched by occupation. No Thomas Franklin printer or compositor is showing.

16th February 1893 St Peter, Bethnal Green
Thomas Franklin 29 Bachelor Printer 5 Wormbolt? Street  Thomas Franklin Printer
Emily Alice Barklamb 25 Spinster 5 Wormbolt? Street John Alfred Barklamb (deceased) Warehouseman
Married by banns, both signed
Witnesses Elizabeth Martin Barklamb her mark and ? indecipherable

22nd November 1893 St Peter, Bethnal Green born 1st November
Maud Emily Franklin parents Thomas and Emily, 5 Winbolt Street, father's occupation printer

5th September 1897 St James the Great Bethnal Green born 21st August
Alfred Thomas Franklin parents Thomas and Emily, 1 Squires Street, father's occupation printer

Have you checked the 1891 census for Thomas Franklins of about the right age for their occupation?

have checked 1891 - no printers or compositors.  Closest was a painter!  Thanks for looking.

With the writing sometimes, Painter can be misread as Printer and vice versa.

See Emily was listed as a widow in 1901.

Found Thomas Alfred Franklin living with wife in Hampstead probably died in 1932.  Emily's was a bigamous marriage.  Emily died in 1906 by jumping from a roof.  Was then living in Jamaica Road, Rotherhithe.  Is there any way of tracing inquest records?

Hi

The London Metropolitan Archives information leaflet on Coroner's records

http://217.154.230.218/NR/rdonlyres/B4AD8012-54EA-4A38-BD3D-273ABB331498/0/41CORONERSRECORDSFORLONDONANDMIDDLESEX.pdf

You might be better checking for a local newspaper report of the inquest. Southwark Local History Library will hold copies of local newspapers.
