William Murray query
« on: Tuesday 26 January 10 19:43 GMT (UK) »
William Marshall and Agnes Rennie married on 5th October 1776 in Falkirk, Stirlingshire.

William and Agnes had a child called Agnes Marshall who was christened on 31st December 1780 in Falkirk, Stirlingshire. Agnes married George Rankine who was a shipping agent. George and Agnes were married in Falkirk, Stirlingshire in 1803.

George and Agnes had a child called Margaret Rankine who was born in 1804. Margaret married George Murray in 1832 in Falkirk who was a ship's carpenter.

George and Margaret had a child called William Murray who was born in 1833 in Falkirk. William married Ann Lamert in Larbert on 4th June 1861. Ann died age 30 in 1865. Then William re-married Christina Peter in Falkirk on 25th June 1869.
I'm having problems with William as I have a marriage to a Jane Whiteford on 4th September 1857 in Glengarnock, Kilbirnie, Ayrshire.
When their son also called William Murray died in 1935 in Falkirk, his parents names are listed as William Murray and Jane Whiteford. But there is no mention of Ann Lamert and Christina Peter. So even I am having problems trying to work out as there could be two William Murray's about that time. There was a William Murray born 1833 in Ireland showing up on some Scottish census records.

So i'm wondering if any of you rootschatters out there can help me as I keep changing his wife and wonder which one is the right one to follow?

I agree with Ev, I think there is more than one couple here.

William Murray and Jane Whiteford look to have been having children from 1857 - 1869. From IGI:

1. WILLIAM MURRAY Birth: 05 OCT 1857 Kilbirnie, Ayr
2. ALEXANDER MURRAY Birth: 04 MAY 1859 Kilbirnie, Ayr
3. WILLIAM MURRAY Birth: 29 JUN 1861 Kilbirnie, Ayr
4. MARY SHIELDS MURRAY Birth: 12 OCT 1869 Kilbirnie, Ayr
5. ROBERT MURRAY Birth: 05 MAR 1870 Kilbirnie, Ayr

I think this is this family in 1861 (struggling with the 1871 entry):

William Murray 28 Iron Furnace Keepers Arintt, b. Ireland
Jane Murray 29 b. Ireland
Alexander Murray 2 b. Kirbinie
Ann Murray 23, sister, Thread Factory Hand b. Ireland

Address: 3 Markey Row, Kilbirnie

This confirms that first William b. 1859 may have died and name used again for William b. 1861

Ev, sounds like you have the family for 1881  :)

Have you looked at the marriage cert for William b. 1861 to reconfirm what names he gave for his parents?

Thanks EV and Monica. I've been trying to work through the paperwork I have and it always came up with the Kilbirnie and Stirlingshire families. Maybe William Murray went down to Ayrshire and met up with a girl from Kilbirnie. I've got a lot of stuff on the Whiteford's if it does link into them.
Regarding the marriages.

The 1857 marriage of William Murray and Jane Whiteford in Kilbirnie has William's parents as William Murray and Elizabeth (it's difficult to make out her surname, but it has six letters). Both William and Jane signed their name with an x mark.

The 1861 marriage of William Murray and Ann Lamert in Larbert has William's parents as George Murray and Margaret Rankine. William residing in Grangemouth and Ann residing in Carronshore. Ann died in 1865 age 30. Then he married Christina Peter in 1869.
