Falconer-Smith in Forres 1816
« on: Wednesday 27 January 10 14:32 GMT (UK) »
Greetings from Canada

GG grandparents  Alexander Falconer and Katharine Smith  m. Jan 11, 1816 in Forres

Alexander b. @ Apr. 18, 1793 Edinkillie, Elgin
He was a precentor in churches.  They ended up in Thurso by 1832 after moving through Killearnan and Rose Markie.

Would one require formal training to be a precentor?

Looking for info on both of their parents or siblings  ???   Any kin still in Forres area?

Any help appreciated.  Thanks,  Anne from

Hi Anne

Do you know if either Alexander or Katherine survived past 1855? If so then their parent's names should be on their death certificates.

I have seen a possible entry for them on the 1841 census at FreeCen living at Cowgate in Thurso with 3 children. Alexander's occupation is Music Teacher which could correspond with previously being a Precentor (one of the jobs of a precentor could be to lead the choir in church).

Thanks for the response Kirsty,   I haven't been able find their death certificates so no info gained from that source. I did locate their daughter Annie in Kingston, Ontario Canada in 1861 but she was living with another younger family of Falconers (relatives?) so appears to have come alone OR because they were no longer alive.

The search continues.   Anne
