Alfred O Shaw
« on: Friday 29 January 10 20:42 GMT (UK) »
I would like to try and solve the mystery of Alfred O Shaw who was born c1877 in Frieston, Lincoln. Sadly I have no idea who his patrents are; he came up on the 1881 census listed as grandson to Charles and Sarah Simpson.

However what you see isn't what you get on this one, I can't find him in the 1891 census but anyone who attempts to help me (and I hope you do) as although his name is Shaw he has the same name as his grandparents as it should really be Simpson-Shaw.

The story is that Charles had an affrair with Sarah who was a young house main (his wife was in a mental institute) and when his wife passed away (in said hospital) they married and took up a double barreled name of Simpson-Shaw.

If he is found in 1891 census he could be listed as Simpson but I can't find him.

1881 census;
 Name  Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability
 Charles SIMPSON   Head   M   Male   78   Frieston, Lincoln, England   Fisherman
 Sarah SIMPSON   Wife   M   Female   60   Grantham, Lincoln, England
 Alfred O. SHAW   Gr Son   U   Male   4   Frieston, Lincoln, England   Scholar

Living with Charles SIMPSON in 1861 was Sarah SHAW (unmarried) ... she had 4 SHAW children who all had S (Simpson?) middle name ... one of them was Mary Ann aged 3 ... who would have been about 18 when Alf was born.

Sarah was aged 37 born Grantham, so is presumably the Sarah SIMPSON of later years.

Thats correct, I have that information thank you though they married in 1859. Charles first wife (Hannah Lancaster) had died three years earlier. Charles and Sarah had further children, Joseph Simpson-Shaw (the yougest) is my gt grandfather.

Thank you all for your help.
