Just had an afterthought. Am I right in thinking that the 2nd quarter of a marriage register would be Apr,May,June? if this is the case then it is unlikely that this 1901 marriage is my Mary Alice, cos she was on the 1901 census (taken around April or May I think) with Robert and Eleanor.
Oh dear :(  It's good to get fresh ideas though - thanks again

Yup, it was the April-May-June so that's possibly dead in the water.

Thinking it over, I sent  you a PM but I suggest that goes on hold - it might pay to get the birth certificate for your grandfather and confirm for once and for all that Mary Alice was his mother, and then go on from there?

My search for Mary and Eleanor has been resurrected from earlier last year.  I decided on impulse to put the info out to the great guys on Rootschat. (A very good move I think!). However seeing the useful comments from Maggie and the others i've pulled out some papers and stuff that I had gathered at the start. Amongst this stuff is the birth cert for Robert b 1903 and his mother is definitely Mary Alice Wormwell formerly Heap. Sorry to have been so excited by the new idea of a second marriage for Mary, but that's cleared up now.
Anyway, back to some more searching!
Thanks everyone, (especially Miss Marple Maggie!)  ;)

Ive looked thro some bits of paper that i gathered when searching for eleanor and Mary Alice last year. One looks really interesting, but I can't remember where or who passed it to me  ??
 I have written:
Nelly Heap
Departed 3 Mar 1910 from Liverpool to Halifax Canada
DOB 1897 (calculated from age)
Age 13 single
Travelled on same voyage as Mrs Heap and John Heap
Ship: Canada
Official No. 106806
Master's name R.O.Jones
Steamship line Dominion
Where bound Portland USA
1264 passengers
I have tried to locate this record on A***Y but can't find it now, ??? maybe it came from FindMyPast. I wondered if the ages were given for Mrs Heap and John. Mary Alice (nee Heap) had a brother called John which could be a possibility for a travelling partner. Could anyone help me out here?
Thanks again folks,
The lassie

Did Mary Alice possibly have a brother Albert?

 - this family came from Burnley, might be a lead.

Thanks again good people! Unfortunately Mary Alice was born in 1871 so would have only been 39 or 40 at the time of this voyage  :( Also she was the first born so her brother John would be younger than her.
I would need to look into the possible link with James, however, my work is getting in the way of my searching at the moment!
Can I thank you both again for your interest,
Clair
