Cosford Marriages
« on: Sunday 31 January 10 19:45 GMT (UK) »
The following marriages are all of folks that are “twigs” on my family tree and database covering the Cosford Registration District in Suffolk.

In an attempt to fill in all missing details on my file I have searched through the marriage records of all the parishes in the Cosford area. However, I could not find these marriages.

I expect that they probably are all Non-Conformist or Register Office Marriages, but wondered if anyone has them on their file them and could provide me with the full marriage details.

None of these are close enough family to justify the cost of purchasing the certificate, but if anyone else has already done so, I would be very grateful to receive details.

I am, of course, very happy to share information with those interested in these folks.

Many thanks,

Kevin Scott

I see you live in Ipswich
Have you been to the Local Record Office there?

You will then be able to check any surviving Non conforminst registers and Parish Records yourself.

Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Hi,

Yes, I am only a 10 minute walk from the Suffolk Record Office and visit there most weeks.
The reason for my posting is that I have checked all the parish records in the Cosford area (it took several months to do this!) and very few non-conformist records have survived.
I was simply wondering if anyone else recognised these names and had the details in their database.

Hi,

Albert Robert Taylor FENNING and Matilda Adelaide STRIBLING were married in Cosford Register Office on 30 Oct 1862

I would be very interested in your connection Mary NEWMAN and James BECKETT, also to the Sarah NEWMAN mentioned in your list.

Hi,
Many thanks for the marriage date. It confirms that given to me on another forum.

As I mentioned in my original posting these folk are only twigs on my tree, but I like to gather as much information as possible to verify my records.

1) Joseph PITTUCK married Sarah Ann NEWMAN in June Qtr.1864. I have been given the information as 17 May 1864 in Kersey, but having checked the parish register the marriage is not recorded. There may have been a non-conformist chapel in Kersey which I have not investigated.
Joseph PITTUCK was the son of Joseph PITTUCK & Mary ANN PERCY. Mary Ann came from Elmsett as did her uncle Robert PERCY who is my 4 x Great Grandfather. I have made a study of the PERCY family of Elmsett and their descendants and hence would like the date and place of this marriage to add to my file.

2) I have no personal connection to James BECKETT and Mary Ann Eliza NEWMAN who married June Qtr 1874, but two of their children married into Elmsett families and are on my file as I have made a study of Elmsett families over many years.
Frederick Walter BECKETT married Eva Alice REVANS in Hadleigh on 7 April 1912.
Herbert Henry BECKETT married Alice Maud HISKEY in Hadleigh on 25 Aug 1923.
The HISKEY & REVANS families had long time connections in Elmsett.

So many of my ancestors came from Elmsett and there was much inter-marrying of families that I have recorded to try and untangle them all.

Regards,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Many thanks for addition information. Like you I had not found the Sarah NEWMAN marriage in the Kersey register. I will file it for later investigation. I think all the poor Kersey NEWMANs are mine.

Like you all of my lines inter-marry in and across the villages, although I must say not many venture into Elmsett.

I am also interested in the NEWMANs as I run the Newman One-Name Study.

Again many thanks

Robert

Dear Kevin Scott,

Thank you so much for your impressive list of "twigs" that may turn into "branches" in someone else's family tree. My own tree (Revans/Ribbans)--the two forms alternate for centuries--overlaps considerably with the names you mention. Perhaps what follows may have some interest for you, though you will certainly know most of it. I am not sure, unfortunately, of exactly where all my information comes from.

Let me start with the REVANS.

William Revans, who m. Mary Ann Keeble in 1880, was born in 1854 at Aldham and d. 15 Apr 1912.
His parents were Barnaby Revans, b. 25 Jun 1826, d. 1890 in Cosford. Married Elizabeth Coates, b. 1834, on 8 Oct 1852 at Hadleigh.
William's brother George, b. c 1858 at Aldham: you give his wife's name as Harriet DOUBLE; I have the same dates but her name as Harriet SHELDRAKE, b. 1859 at Hadleigh, d. 1919; m. Dec 1880. They had many children; one of them, Annie, b. 1893, m. Stanley George Vince (one of the names on your list).
Another sibling is Lydia, b. c 1860, who m. Reuben Arthur Chisnall in 1883. I have a note that she had a child Herbert Charles, b. 4 Jun 1881 before her marriage; then follow nine more children.

In today's follow-up letter you mention a new Revans I do not know: Eve Alice Revans, who m. Frederick Walter Beckett on 7 Apr 1912. You refer to Revans/Hickley connections in Elmstett. I shoulde like to know more--I have a note of only one such connection: Charles King Revans, b. 1870 at Aldham, m. Flora Eliza Hickley on 4 May 1889. Charles was son of George Revans, married to Ann Barber; he was the son of the elder Barnaby (m. to Lydia Frost) and brother of the Barnaby m. to Elizabeth Coates.

I don't know any of the GANT family you record, but the family has been thoroughly described in Gant One Name on the internet. The one I know about is Mary Gant, b. 9 Jan 1792 at Little Blackenham, d. 4 Mar 1886 at Whitton (a long-lived lady), m. 22 Nov 1813 at Little Blackenham to James Ribbans, b. 1786 at Barham, d. 2 Dec 1872 at Great Blackenham. These were my gt gt parents, the father of Aaron Ribbans (1829-1903), who fathered some 20 children.

Another VINCE I have come across is John Vince, who m. Sarah Revans on 25 Dec 1787. She was born c 1766 at Aldham, daughter of Robert Ribbans, b. 1734, d. 7 Jan 1803, and Sarah Chittock, b.30 Oct 1733, d. 1772 at Aldham; they were married on 30 Oct 30 1763 at Debenham: they were apparently the grandparents of James Ribbans/Mary Gant.

And I have one BALDREY: Ann Elizabeth Baldrey, who m. David Ribbans, b. 6 Jun 1832, d. 4 Oct 1903 at Edmonton. His parents were Jonathan Matthew Ribbans, b. 8 Dec 1806, and Eve Goodall, m, 11 Dec 1826 at Martlesham. John Odell (an Odell was David's second wife) has a file on his family.

This is quite enough for one go, but you did ask for as much information as possible. I hope some of it is useful. For my part, I should like to learn about any other Revans/Ribbans you may have come across.

Best wishes,
Geoffrey Ribbans (grib)

Hello Geoffrey,

Thankyou for taking time to reply.

With reference to the marriage of George REVANS in Dec. Qtr 1880, Cosford, vol.4a p.1030, the four people on that page are -
Nathan BATTEL
Harriet DOUBLE
George REVANS
Harriet SHELDRAKE
So the question is - which Harriet did George REVANS marry?
The answer I believe can be found in the 1881 census
1) Nathan & Harriet BATTLE are recorded in Benton Street, Hadleigh. Their ages are given as 63 & 60 respectively. Far too old for our newly married Harriet REVANS. I think this has to be Harriet SHELDRAKE
2) George & Harriet REVANS are living in Angel Square, Hadleigh. Next door is Caroline HUGHES (widow). This I believe is Harriet's mother. See the 1871 census where Caroline Hughes is living with Harriet DOUBLE.
Caroline BAKER married Robert DOUBLE 1 Apr 1841 in Hadleigh.
Caroline DOUBLE (widow) married Mark HUGHES 15 November 1864 in Hadleigh

I hope this makes sense. Of course the marriage certificate of George REVANS & Harriet would confirm this!

The Mary GANT you mention is from the Blakenham GANT family. I know they are Linda GANTs (GANT one-name sudy) family. I have not been able to connect them to my Elmsett GANTS and although I have not heard from Linda in a long time, the last I heard she had not found a connection either.

As regards the other REVANS you mention - they are all in my file.
If you can PM me your email address, I would be happy to share my REVANS research.

Regards,
Kevin
