James McKernan

I am interested in any information relating to James McKernan, listed as an inmate of St Patrick's House, South Circular Road, Dublin, in the 1911 census. His birthplace is listed as County Cavan and his age as 70, which means that he would have been born around 1841.

I have now found out that James McKernan was born in Swanlinbar in 1840 and that his father's name was Frank.

Any further information that anyone may be able to provide would be much appreciated.

Swanlinbar is just near the border with Co. Fermanagh so keep that in mind when searching for records.
Where have you searched for information already?

I do not really know where to search at the moment. Would there be any point in asking the GRO with such scant information?

Not sure what you are thinking about asking GRO for but you really do need more information.
Have you done any research in Ireland before? If not there's a very good booklet on Co.Donegal research which also applies to searching all over Ireland-

Civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages began 1864 (from 1845 for other marriages) so before these dates you'll need to search for church records.

Thanks for the link. From what you say, it looks like I will have to search church records if someone was born in 1840.  Thanks again for your help.
