William Robert Crabb (b1848)
« on: Friday 05 February 10 01:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

This is my first first post so please be gentle.
I am researching a relative William Robert Crabb (b abt 1848) who may have been born in Jersey.  This is listed in the 1851 census.  I would be very interested in any information.  He was staying with his maternal grandparents (YOUNG) at the time.

Thanks
Andrew

Welcome to Rootschat.  ;D

Seems to be several census records on him. Married to Mary Overmass (London, England Marriage Bands.) 13 Nov 1871.  Father James Crabb. Marys father William Overmass.
Death Record  1889 in Camberwell. London.
Occupation:- Carpenter.
In Surrey on the 1881 census - 11 Mosedale Street.
William R. Crabb 30 Carpenter
Mary Crabb 34 Born Devon
Hettie M. Crabb 10 Born Paddington
Alfred T. Crabb 6 Born Camberwell
William J. Crabb 2 Born Camberwell
Infant Crabb Born Camberwell.
A couple of more children shown with Mary on the 1891 census after the death of William. Gertrude and Mabel.
1901 shows Mary - only 3 children still with her - William. James and Mabel.

Thanks for the reply and the information.    :D

I have been able to search through the census details for WRC and also have his death and marriage certs.  What you have provided below certainly confirms this

I have just not been able to pin down his birth.  In the 1881 census he is recorded as being born in Surry although some other information, possibly has him born in Jersey.  Would therer be any reason why he may change his place of birth in 1881.

It is this piece of information that I am searching for.

What is the best way to check on births in Jersey.  Is there anything online?

Andrew

Hi Andrew.

I am pleased I was able to confirm your findings.  It is also best to specify what information you have and what you seek to save the time and efforts of people that search.  It takes a length of time to switch between census and BMD records as you will appreciate.

It may have been more beneficial to you if you had requested a look up for the birth of William rather than any information.

I hope someone will be able to assist you with this request.  ;D

Hi Dettori28,

Thanks for the advice in wrting the post. I apologise for the extra work.

Any thoughts or links on how to confirm the birth dates of those born on Jersey.

Does Jersey have any online records?

All the best

Andrew :)

There are some St Helier baptism records on-line at www.jerseyheritagetrust.jeron.je, quite a lot of Crabbs on the site but I don't know if any of them are yours.
