Inkpen - Henry Bint - look up please
« on: Friday 05 February 10 08:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone
I have found a grave of a H Bint who I now know to be Henry Bint. There are many Bints in my family and I am looking to see if he should be there as well. He died in France 2 Jan 1915 and I have just about explored all the Military sources. One record says that whilst he joined the Army at Swindon, Wilts he had been born in Inkpen, Berks -just along the M4 were it there then!!!!

So I am guessing he was B circa 1880 or later presuming he was 18 when he joined the Army. It appears he was in the Army when WW1 started as he arrived in France about  7 Oct 1914.

I have his MIC and Roll of Honour entry, his CWGC details - no where is there anything I have found, about his age, parents etc so this is a big long shot.

Thanks for taking the time to read this
Cheers
Nigel

You have probably already checked freebmd - no Henry Bint b Berks.  One b Lincs 1879 and another b Aston 1879 and that's it until 1894

I would be suspicious about this as usually the birthplace and place of enlistment are transposed on Ancestry.  So I guess it should say born Swindon, enlisted Inkpen.  Might be worth checking on another site.

You say you are guessing at an 1880 birthyear which would mean he was 35 when he died.  As no age is shown on the CWGC website - is there something in his records that supports an 1880 birthyear?

Hi Carole
It is just a guess.
I reckon he had to be regular army when WW1 started as he landed at Zeebruge on 6 Oct 1914 as part of the 21st Brigade.
Coutrai was in German occupation from late in 1914 until much later in the war, there was a POW camp there and I reckon from all the info I have was that Henry died either a POW or in the care of a German Hospital.
I have been to his grave in Courtrai and have photos of his head stone - no clues there and none on CWGC.
I have trolled through the census and cant see him, Sloe Gin may be right but cant find him reversing what I presumed to be right.
He may not be related to me but I have many Bints who are and I wonder who this chap was and if ever any one visits / visited his grave?
Got any ideas?

If we assume that he definitely was just Henry - no middle name - there are only 2 on freebmd - 1879  in Warwickshire and 1880 in Islington

WWI service records has a Henry Bint b 1877 enlisted in the Royal Berkshires address at that time was Kidderminster

Henry Bint 1880 Army Veterinary Corp - address Finsbury Rd

I would guess that they are the ones whose births are on freebmd

Then we come to "your" Henry

Henry Bint Birth Place Inkpen Berks residing in Swindon enlisted Devizes died 2 Jan 1915
Rank: L/Corporal
Regiment: Duke of Edinburgh's Wiltshire Reg
Number: 8782

Inkpen was in the Hungerford registration district

Does a Henry Bint appear as one of them?

I don't think the 2 on FBMD are him and as the regiments and MIC's for the 2 you have found don't include Henry's regiment and his MIC only lists 2nd Wiltshire Regiment then that rules the Kidderminster and Finsbury guys out.

So I would have expected to find Henry some where in the census or FBMD leaving dates out but none seem to fit.

I do not have Henry in my tree but that does not mean he should not be there and now I kind of want to find him?

I would be suspicious about this as usually the birthplace and place of enlistment are transposed on Ancestry.

Just took another look, and at long last Ancestry have fixed the errors in their SDGW database.  Not before time!

So at least we know that 'born Inkpen, residing Swindon' was the information supplied.  Whether it was accurate or not is another matter!  Perhaps Henry was not his first name, just the name he went by.

There's this one:

Dec 1893
Bint    William Henry         Hungerford    2c   238

Still old enough to have enlisted before the war, and old enough to serve abroad in 1914.

And this one (page should be 260, I reckon)

Births Mar 1888
BINT    George Henry         Hungerford    2c   240
