« on: Saturday 06 February 10 22:16 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out where my wife's great grandparents were buried, they were, William Hayes b.1859 Hindley Lancashire d. march1937 at Houghton aged 78 and his wife Ann Jane Hayes b.1857 Hindley Lancashire d.June 1937 at Houghton, i do not know where they lived in Houghton, i have found them on the 1911 census in Sunderland living at no4 Albert Street- Chester Road Sunderland, but that is the only info i have i wish i could find out where they are buried and where the records are, i live in Hull which is too far for me to travel any info greatly appreciated.

Probably buried rather than cremated. To try to find out where they are buried the death certificates of both husband and wife may help but then they may not have a marker on their graves. Possibly they may (or may not)  be recorded in the burials of a Parish Register. Which Parish hopefully may be evident on a 1930's death certificate which should give exactly where they died.  The possibilities are numerous and they could have been buried in a council cemtetery!

They would probably be buried in Houghton Cemetery see http://www.sunderland.gov.uk/Public/Editable/Life-Episodes/DWAD/Master/cem-houghton.asp

Genealogical Research:- The Cemeteries Office holds burial records for all of the 10 cemeteries, however these are generally in the form of large books, many of which are in a fragile condition. To assist anyone who may wish to research their family history all of the burial records have been placed on film and are available at the  Local Studies Centre at the Central Library, Fawcett Street.

The films are also available in the local Genealogical Branch Library system of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (on order from Salt Lake City).

There are 3 Films of these Sunderland area records. Most likely one is numbered 2145242.

Using the updated search on Sunderland BMD site it appears William died 17/3/1937 & Ann died 14/5/1937.  This narrows down the period of time to check the burial records.

Cheers
